OMG what an odd day

Day 1 of potty training ds ....... Pants on at 9am. I started putting him on potty every 30 minutes without success. Small accident at 11.30 just as swe were getting trousers off, so not too concerned as I was thrilled he had told me he needed to go that time. Then as the day went on it became obvious to me that he needed to do a poo but didn't seem able to. He has then spent the rest of the day until bedtime 7pm asking to go on the potty approx every 10 - 15 minutes without any success at all. There have been no accidents so he has just been holding on all day. Each time he just sat there for a couple of minutes and then got off again.

He is now in bed in a nappy which i guess will be full by morning.

DH says I shouldn't put him on every 15 minutes but surely if he is asking then i should. i can't help thinking that if he relaxes and does a wee or a poo just once then he will relax and be fine and we will get over it, but i don't want to say no if he asks to go on. But it has been the most appalling day.

What would you do?

IME (which is fairly limited tbh) if they are ready to potty train then they get the hang of things pretty quickly.

My DD1 had a first day like this but was completely dry within 4 days (she was 3.1). The first day she went to her potty 24 times with little actually happening but it got a lot better within days (I have her sticker chart to prove it)

I would say let him go to the potty when he asks to or he'll get mixed messages. If you are still at this point 2 weeks down the line then maybe think again about whether he is ready.
