Windy baby - when do they grow out of it

My 9 week old is constantly struggling with wind. If he’s awake he is pulling his knees to his chest 90% of the time. He’s always been a bit like this but it’s got much worse over the last couple of weeks to the point the only place I can get him to nap is in the carrier where he can’t wake himself up from doing this. He’s been getting much more distressed from this and screams when he crunches his legs sometimes.

During the night he squirms and grunts and groans half the night and keeps us awake the whole time (also not sure if he’s sleeping!)

I’ve bought some gripe water, going to the GP today for his 8 week appointment, and have been dedicating more time to winding him and doing lots of tummy massages when changing him. He has no trouble with constipation at all and is EBF.

does anyone have any tips or tricks that helped them that I’m not doing and most importantly when did yours grow out of it? Feel like I’m waiting for 12 weeks atm

Forgot to add I’ve given up dairy for a few weeks now and not sure it’s made a difference (but scared to test that) and have been having fennel tea three times a day.

I'm having this issue at 7.5 weeks. Apparently it's due to their immature digestive systems and they're trying to coordinate muscles to learn how to pass wind and poo. I'm formula feeding. But interested to hear others experiences. Also cant sleep with him next to me! Dead man walking right now.

I found it improved pretty much overnight at 12 weeks. Infacol helped in the meantime

I’m hoping 12 weeks is a turning point! He was 2 weeks early (but a huge baby at 10lb) so hoping it won’t be week 14 and it goes by birth not gestational age…. 😩

3 months!

Yes wait for around 12ish weeks, this is when the parotid gland kicks in and a lot of the gas symptoms reduce (or earlier if you see signs of saliva, it means the parotid glands are maturing to help baby with digestive system!)

This can be normal baby behaviour.. ride the tides.. some tips (take or leave) slings for sleeping then, gentle wind after bF if needed, massage if it helps, lullaby's, tummy time, contact naps.. cut out gassy triggering foods you eat (not just milk it's dark greens etc) soy has a similar protein to CMP. It'll get easier, we're with you 😊

I do see more saliva and was confused as it’s obviously way too soon for teething, but it’s almost got worse since I’ve noticed that!? Or maybe he’s just more vocal…

The crying fills me with anxiety (classic first time mum I guess). So can’t wait for it to be over

For us it improved significantly around the 4 month mark. In the meantime, we found tummy time really helped, and putting a warm flannel on his tummy before bicycling legs also helped things move along. Good luck!

Took 4 months to completely grow out of it, I was hoping for 12 weeks as that is what everyone told me but it was a little longer for us. It’s so hard but I found keeping them distracted and entertained when awake did help. Massage/bicycle legs to. And I found a dummy soooooo helpful, to soothe and distract. But it’s really tough and they just grow out of it. My sister did swear by the Frida Baby Windee to help release the gas when it was partially bad!
My second baby didn’t have it at all, I had gripe water ready and never even opened it. Couldn’t believe it!!!
You got this OP!

My DD was dreadfully windy / colicky and at 3 months it's like someone flicked a switch and she completely changed!
Congratulations!

My LO is about to turn 16 weeks (13 weeks adjusted) he was born at 37 weeks and 5lb 13oz and we have literally just left this phase….well I’d say the last little bit.

He was EBF for a month but severe tongue tie so had to switch to formula. He was awake all night and in so much pain with awful distended belly. GP didn’t want to know as he was gaining weight. Eventually through trial and error we tried lactose free milk and it has made a huge difference. I will admit that was only 3 weeks ago so could be a combination of milk and him maturing. I know breast milk has more lactose in it than cows milk if that is perhaps a factor at all.

you can use colief drops if you are breastfeeding? Maybe worth a try. I think you mix a few drops with some expressed milk on a spoon just prior to feeding and it breaks down lactose and makes it easy to digest.

Either way I would say it eased off at about 14 weeks. I could tell my LO was struggling to co-ordinate his belly and bowels up until then, it was like he just didn’t know how to pass wind. He seems to have that down now!

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies. Reassuring to know there’s an end in sight. I’ve bought gripe water which I will try (once he is recovered from his vaccinations) and if not infacol / colief
