Dummy weaning for 5 mo

I'm looking for help with hopefully weaning my 5 month old off his dummy. He only has it for naps and bedtime but the dummy run through the night is a killer. I have tried introducing a comforter which he does love but only alongside the dummy. Have tried putting him down calm, awake and with comforter but he gradually gets so worked up until he gets the dummy. He won't fall asleep in my arms without it, no amount of hushing, rocking or swaying helps, it's the only thing that settles him. He screams the house down until he gets it and I don't like just leaving him to cry. If anybody has any tried and tested weaning tips, I would really appreciate them so I could potentially get more sleep at night! Thank you.

Honestly, at 5mo, unless there's a medical need to remove a dummy, I'd just let him have it especially if he's only having it for sleeping. It's a comfort and some babies need that.

Why do you need to wean him at this stage?

Tbh the best advice with dummies is never to start (said from the mother of a 2 year old and 3 year old dummy user DC!) but once you've started I think 5 months is really way too soon to wean them off anything.

@wherethewildtbingsgo I guess just because it disturbs sleep through the night rather than helping it. We can be replacing the dummy 8-10 times a night. Or maybe some positive information on how soon he will be able to put it in himself 😂🙈

He'll soon learn to find it himself and pop back in. Get the glow in the dark ones.

It's a good sleep aid if he's used to having one.

You could try something like this www.sleepytot.co.uk

Or a dummy clip attached to his sleeping bag and hope he finds it again.

I think tbh the only way to wean off a dummy is to go cold turkey.

You just need to get to 6 months and they can put it back themselves which will be an absolute game changer. They’re rubbish at finding them though so you need loads (never sent ours to bed with less than 10). You can start encouraging it now by putting the dummy in his hand and guiding it towards his mouth.

Not weaning advice, but I've seen on Big Little Feelings one of the mums puts a bunch of dummies in the crib so baby can find at least one!
She does like 20 but I'm sure you could do with just 5/6 😂

He'll learn in a matter of weeks how to find and replace his own dummy. I wouldn't bother weaning. He'd probably be crying for you anyway when he woke up as he's still so little l!

We always used 6 dummies in the cot. Never more than a minute before she found one 😂

Mine never did and we have started weaning at 12 and a half months haha

Thanks all, looks like I just need to bide my time and buy a bulk load of them 😂 my first didn't have one so this is new territory!
