When did your child play with Duplo?

My daughter doesn't like building with Duplo. She's just turned two and just pulls them apart. She's only had them a month so I think I might be being a bit anxious for no reason but was wondering when your child started constructing with them? Am I being a helicopter parent or is this still early days? Ive tried showing her how it works but she's not too interested.

My youngest is nearly 3 and has played with it the last 10 months. My eldest- 6- never played with it, doesn’t really like toys.

Needmorelego · 16/10/2023 11:46

My daughter never really built anything. She liked the figures and vehicles. She would sometimes line the bricks up and use them as a track for cars and trains (any cars or trains - not specifically Duplo ones).
Your daughter might build.
She might not.
It doesn't really matter. Despite my user name Duplo and Lego aren't compulsory.

Ds was around 2.

I'd put it away for a few months let her forget about it, then bring it back out again when she's a bit older.

Or she might just not enjoy playing it with it at any age!

Mine never liked it. They got in to proper Lego around age 5-6

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 16/10/2023 11:48

About 2.6yo until about 6yo. And then moved onto Lego.

ReluctantFishLady · 16/10/2023 11:49

My son is 2 but prefers stickle bricks and magna tiles to duplo. The older child was probably about 3 when he started liking building simple things with duplo. I then bought him a larger set and he was put off by the complexity.

DS1 is 7 and still doesn't like Duplo or Lego

BuffaloCauliflower · 16/10/2023 11:52

DS is nearly 3 and likes Duplo (mine from when I was a child and we have lots) but mostly likes the vehicles/figures/animals at the moment, he doesn’t build much, though he loves building with his pipe construction toy. I wouldn’t expect most just turned 2 year olds to build with Duplo, it’s a bit soon for that kind of dexterity and creativity.

Pacificisolated · 16/10/2023 11:55

It sounds like she’s still figuring it out! We got duplo when my DD was a similar age and to begin with it was mainly just me who played with it. Eventually she got the hang of it and will now play independently. We got gifted a lot of sets and my DD (nearly 3) loves the people, vehicles, animals and slides rather than building as such which the blocks.

My girls played with it from 18 months to 5 when we switched to Lego. They both struggled with building at the start though. MegaBloks are easier to start with.

Thanks everyone! As i was typing the question I thought I was being a bit silly but you just second guess yourself when you hear of other kids building the eiffel tower at the same age

wait until you panic your child’s behind because 3 year olds are riding bikes without stablisers ….it’s so much fun ;)

vix3rd · 16/10/2023 12:25

You'll find that they go through phases with it.
My niece has always loved it but sometimes it was building a big tower, sometimes it was taking it all apart, sometimes it was connecting 2 bits & immediately taking them apart - over & over !
She's now 9 & still loves me to bring it out - much more that little lego.

AvengedQuince · 16/10/2023 12:38

About 18 months until 4, overlapping with my old Lego from about two and a half.

professionalnomad · 16/10/2023 13:09

2.5
She builds towers and knocks them down. Nothing more

Maryamlouise · 16/10/2023 21:13

Got it at about 18 months I think for DS1 and for ages would just put them together as a line/tower as that was what I did with them the first time we used them. Now (age 7) loves them and builds all sort of complex things.

Yourebeingtooloud · 16/10/2023 21:18

Dc1 - From around 18 months but only in structured play at that age ie with an adult leading. Also we had stuff like the Duplo train so it was more playing with that than building. Never that into Lego.

DC2 was properly building with it from around 1. And then onto real Lego by about 2.5 - I know for Christmas by 3 they had specific Lego sets on a wish list (cos they were all retired and really hard to get!). Still massively into it at 10.

In short, they are all different!

emeralue · 16/10/2023 22:34

My 16mo loves hers, as a PP said, sometimes building big stacks and sometimes connecting and disconnecting the same few bricks over and over.

StaringAtTheWater · 16/10/2023 22:51

I read pulling apart / knocking things down is the first stage in learning to build. I don't remember what age my boys starting building with lego, but they both spent a lot of time breaking things up first!
