Been to GP with 1yo - not clear what bumps on tongue are & scared here.

Hi everyone, I would be so grateful for anyone who could share information if they came across anything similar.

My 1 yo came down with flu symptoms (after me) lots of snot, coughing but only very slight or no temperature. Drooling a lot. Then I noticed these little raised white bumps on his tongue, and now there's at least one on his lip.

Been to GP, who wasn't sure what it was but suggested oral thrush, strawberry tongue due to possible strep A and he said he saw ulcers in his mouth. He scared me saying that if ulcers don't heal within a week it might be a symptom of a serious issue but didn't say what.

I have shown the picture to my mother who is a dentist and she said she didn't see anything like that in her practice.

I am so scared. Any information what we might be dealing with here would be so helpful.

My son started nursery about 2 months ago abd has been ill with one cold after another and also had a ear infection once at that time . Worried also he had been picking these bugs ups.sp easily and when 111 nurse asked today whether he was diagnosed with leukaemia well... I know they were just asking questions but I am now quite worried. Gulp.

Well he's not well, it's viral and often these things appear. I've noticed these bumps as an adult when severely ill and run down. Leukaemia is normally seen by continuing fever, cough, poor blood clotting, bruising etc so I think it unlikely. He's poorly and needs time to recover.

Leukaemia is unlikely- she’s just asking because repeat infections which unfortunately are common in little ones esp just starting nursery and as we head into winter.
Did they give antibiotics for the suspected strep?
Can you get a second opinion somewhere?
Could be Hand, Foot and Mouth? (Usually a temp but can break pretty quick at start so could miss it.
Could also just be general rundown viral illness symptoms.

I’d say hand foot and mouth. Give him an ice lolly and See how he is after. Normally they perk up as it cools off the blisters in the mouth.

Having had two with hand foot and mouth I'd be inclined to say that. Starts with a bit of a runny nose and cold then the spots appear. Check between his fingers and toes for little red bumps, they can go grey as they heal.

Has he had his MMR? Measles is on the rise and that gives oral spots.

Thanks all, I think I will be going back to our usual GPs who are very good for a second opinion. I can't see anything on his feet or hands or anywhere else.

@MillyMollyMardy My LO only turned 1 last week so only just was eligible to book in for his vaccination so he hasn't had it yet. The GP said it was unlikely but I did wonder myself. No other redness.

Has he had any new foods recently?

i get bumps that look like that all the time and they often take a long time to go away. For me, they are a food reaction.

my child is a teen now so I don’t know if they still have cold teething rings/chews or if they have fallen out of fashion. If they do, I would offer him one. If the bumps are painful, it will sooth the pain.

another option would be homemade ice lollies. For a child that young I would make them with very dilute juice. Again, back when mine was young there were these mesh bags you could use and put an ice cube sized one inside so it wouldn’t be a choking hazard.

Thank you everyone, so our usual GPs (who I trust and who are great) said not thrush, not srep A. So no need for meds, yay.

Her thoughts were either viral reaction to the nasty bug we are both battling, first exposure to herpes virus or HFM (although she thought it wasnt likely as no other blisters on hands, feet or groin) so here we go. He is fine in himself during the day and is better during the night too now the cough isnt that bad but still rivers of snot. In any case as he is okay in himself no treatment rather than calpol and everything to help symptoms of the cold.

Thank you for the ice lolly idea, i will try that as my baby does not like teethers, cold or not - just no interest whatsoever!
