I have been weaning my DS since he was 6 months old, I have been doing BLW and purées the issue I have is he will not eat a lot of savoury food only fruit. He will have porridge and banana for breakfast and melon and toast as finger foods which he is great at but doesn't eat much just sucks and throws on the floor ! I have tried him with vegetables, mash , cottage pie blended etc but he will not eat it he did eat some butternut squash with formula added but only for a day or 2 most days he has a Ella's or hienz pouch always fruit ones. I have tried his m with the savour chicken dinner etc but he refuses. Should I be concerned does anyone have any tips to intrude more vegetable and savoury foods. I have also done the veg pancakes but as he has no teeth yet he doesn't really eat them just sucks and spits in out.

I didn’t do any BLW so can’t help there - didn’t want the mess! I did jars and pouches - worked our way through the age ranges but alternating savoury and sweet. Sometimes (many times) it took several tries with a different new favour for DT’s to eat it. Unfortunately you just have to persevere and keep introducing new foods - it works and you will get there.

I could have written this myself. My ds will eat endless fruit and porridge but any actual food and dinners after a few bites he’s uninterested. I’ve mentioned to health visitor and gp and they always say not to worry for now and just keep offering it and let him eat what he wants never to force it

Just keep persevering and don't give fruit as a back up option. Make sure baby is hungry when you come to the table but no pressure at all. Just offer what you are eating modified for a baby.

Don't take this the wrong way either, I'm all for convenience but I had a conversation with a dietitian once and she said, fine to use pouches and jarred food (a bit low in protein and iron) but that lots of kids don't get on well with them because they just don't taste very good. Especially the ones that aren't just fruit

Mine loved the jars and pouches - there is so much variety. For us it was a great introduction to weaning and so easy especially when they started nursery (at six months old just as we started weaning) and we were always pushed for time.

I agree just keep going with different r foods and expect food to be refused and thrown on the floor. Whatever they do eat is a bonus. Treat it as if it's a taster session and give them milk afterwards to fill them up.

The whole process can be a lot more gradual than you think. Mine wasn't on 3 meals a day until at least 10 months. Milk played a large part in keeping her full for long time after that.

Have you tried her with cottage cheese? Always a winner for me! Avocado is great too and very nutritious.

@Parker231 oh don't misunderstand me. I used them when I needed to as well. They are super handy. But they really don't taste that great. Have you tried the Ella's savoury chicken dinner? It's truly vile!

I just meant for a baby struggling to move on from fruit it's worth trying something different if they don't like them.

I've not tried hummus yet I will get that a go and the cottage cheese ! Thank-you for all the advice I will keep persisting.

I do make my own food and try him with what we are having mash potatoes, spag bol etc so not always bought. He also has porridge most mornings which he loves. But refuses the savoury but will happily eat a full jar or pouch if it's fruit so I'm happy that he is eating that and he is still on 4/5 7oz bottles a day to make sure he isn't hungry.

I'd rather he eat the homemade dinners we have as the pitches are so expensive Smile

I think you might've answered it yourself in your last post. He's having too much milk so isn't hungry and therefore just eats the tasty fruit. 9 months old only need 500-600 mls a day.

Some kids start eating and naturally decrease the amount of milk themselves. Others need to be made a but hungry to eat. Cut back on the milk he drinks a bit and make sure he's coming to the table hungry

Whentwobecomesthree · 13/10/2023 18:49

And it decreases quite quickly, it's down to 350-400ml by 10 months if I remember correctly

Could you try finger foods of sweeter tasting vegetables like carrot, sweet potato etc? Or potato tots with other veggies mixed in e.g. sweet potato & brocolli tots
