Baby doesn't drink milk

Baby is nearly three months and just doesn't seem to like milk. Just now she's gone to bed having had 2oz and when I reoffer she squirms and cries. I'm not forcing so Jo bottle aversion, she's just from birth not wanted a lot of milk. Not losing weight and has jumped a centile so not too worried just yet but I just don't understand how she can sustain herself on so little... I guess what I'm after are stories of those with los that didn't drink much milk but still thrived..

My boy is the same. Never been a fan and on a few occasions went off it completely. The only way we got it in him was when asleep, quickly pull dummy out and out bottle in. Some days he’s better than others. Luckily now we are on solids he is in 3 meals a day, I get maybe 15oz max in 24 hours in him, he’s now loving water and has milk in his porridge and I give him vitamins just in case. He has never lost weight either. Health visitor said don’t worry some babies are like this.

I know it’s worrying but you’re doing right not forcing it. I figured when they are hungry they will take it. Plus they go through phases, sometimes if teeth hurt they don’t like it. I found waiting 30 mins for milk to cool down helps, my boy doesn’t like it that warm

I couldn't read and run as we are just starting to turn a corner with this with my 6 month old, who up until a week ago didn't drink more than 3 oz at a time and was waking multiple times a night.

Last week we ditched the perfect prep machine and started making up the bottles the traditional way, cooling and storing in the fridge and then using a bottle warmer when time for a feed. Suddenly she is drinking 6oz in one go and honestly i could kick myself for not thinking of this sooner. I'm not sure, but think the bubbles from the machine may have been upsetting her tummy.

She also will only drink really warm milk so maybe if you're giving the milk at room temp warm it up a little more. It may also be time to try a few different teats (medium or fast flow) and see if that helps.

Hopefully one of these help as i know how frustrating it is.

I've heard a few MNers say that their LOs are much better without the Perfect Prep.

If you're using one OP I'd stop for a few days and see if they improves things.

You could also try adding Dentinox to the bottles or a a comfort milk?

Forgot to say that drinking 2 floz isn't necessarily a problem as some babies just like a little and often.

As long as she's getting roughly 2.5 Floz per pound in weight in 24 hours she will be fine Wink

Interesting re the prep machine - will try today and report back! It's just so frustrating. I feel like my whole mood is dependant on if she drinks her milk and it gives me huge anxiety before bedtime as I know she'll be up

Is she gaining weight every week (sorry my brain can’t do oz, but however many it’s meant to be) and having lots of heavily wet nappies? If yes, put your worries away. If no, maybe consider silent reflux. Take care of yourself too!

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 13/10/2023 06:42

Agree with the PP, if she's happy and gaining weight I don't think you e got much to be concerned about Wink

When you say it's making you worried when she doesn't drink her milk, are you going off the guidance on the carton or are you working it out from your DD's weight?

testy1997 · 13/10/2023 07:48

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto she's not having anywhere near what she should have for her weight but never really has tbh. I'm just trying to be responsive and up an oz if she has been draining a bottle. I find the weight thing really stressful so not paying mind to it!

@Gremlinsateit am taking her to be weighed today but she has gained every month so far so no one is really worried

Any improvement today without the prep machine?

testy1997 · 13/10/2023 21:08

@Blauehortensie actually yes! But the last bottle of the day was chaos - screaming and she drank 1oz. I wonder what is going on as she's always wild at that time? Any tips!?

Well that's promising! She may have just gotten overtired. Worth persisting without the prep machine for a few days to see if it really is helping but I definitely think some babies just don't get on with it.

Gremlinsateit · 13/10/2023 22:53

Sounds like good progress. Wild and fussy in the evening is classic - what our grandmothers would have called colic, but not needing any medication. Is her body sloped upwards while she’s drinking and for a little while afterwards to help the milk go down the right way?

testy1997 · 14/10/2023 07:02

@Gremlinsateit but is it normal for every night for her to have 1 oz and scream to sleep. I'm really good with wake windows etc?!

@Blauehortensie this is my plan. Will report back! Thanks for the advice!

If she's having an ounce and then screaming, is she showing any other symptoms of CMPA?

PinkPink1 · 14/10/2023 09:58

Hi my dd is very fussy with particular bottles. She didn't like Tommee Tippee and she gave up. She also struggled and then gave up in frustration if the teat wasn't the right size. Try a different bottle brand and use medium or fast flow teats.

testy1997 · 14/10/2023 11:20

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto but she seems to be ok on other bottles yesterday and no symptoms that I know of
