My twin toddlers hair growing super slow

Hello! I have two just over two year old twin girls, both of whom are seemingly happy and healthy. But their hair isn’t growing fast. They barely have a head full between them.

I'm desperate to start plaiting and styling their hair, and for them to finally stop being mistaken for boys. Is there anything you did to help with this? Or could this be due to an underlying health condition? Is it normal for twins hair growth to be slower? I might be overthinking but isn’t that part of parenthood?

My eldest had something called Short Anagen Syndrome. She had basically no hair at 2, and didn't have hair you could plait until maybe 8ish? She is now mid teens and has grown out of it, as lots of kids do, and has long thick-ish hair

Just the luck of the draw, one of mine was honestly almost bold until y2, then developed gorgeous thick hair that is a PITA and she can sit on (unfortunately my other DD didn't fair so well but has just shoulder length hair)

Some children’s hair just grows slower.

hate to say it, but keeping DD’s hair in a pixie crop until school age meant it really thickened up.

Older DD’s I tried to grow, but because it was thin and weak it snapped off, then it became an ongoing battle trying to keep the length while also getting rid of the dead weak hair and allow it to thicken.

also if your kids naturally don’t have strong hair, plaiting and styling could further stress it. Best to keep short imo.

A dermatologist suggested that my DD might have short anagen syndrome, but it’s very rare, so she’d never seen it before (we were seeing her about something entirely different). I looked into it and there was something that didn’t quite fit, so I’m still not sure.

Are your DDs blonde, OP? In my family it seems to be associated with very fine, very blonde hair, and it starts growing as normal by the time they reach 10.

Ducksurprise · 12/10/2023 16:18

Yes , mine are blonde, interesting

Enobaria · 12/10/2023 19:32

Yeah, my DDs are blonde, very fair and they were both born with absolutely no hair.

I'm not super precious about it, I think they’re gorgeous little girls, and if it’s a pixie cut they will always have, then I guess pixie cuts are now in. 😂 (I had a pixie cut at secondary school and was heavily bullied for it so maybe I’m just leaning on my childhood trauma here. Haha.)

When dropping them off to daycare, I see other children - that appear younger - with pigtails and plaits etc, and maybe a little bit of worry set in? But on the flip side, my DDs are super tall, 95th percentile tall, so I guess all their energies are going into growing.

My dd2 was bald till 2ish then had a mullet until she was near school age. At 10 she has long, naturally highlighted, beautiful blond hair. And she's very particular how she has it styled, be careful what you wish for😂

MissAmbrosia · 12/10/2023 19:43

My dd had barely any hair for the first couple of years. By the time she was about 3 it started growing.

WeightoftheWorld · 12/10/2023 19:59

Anecdotal but I'd echo that a few of the families ice know, the ones with hardly any hair when they were toddlers were all blonde! By the time they were say 4 or so it was completely the same as their peers.

disappearingfish · 12/10/2023 20:01

Also had a bald baby, she had hair (just about) at 3.5. First (tiny) plait at 5.5.

Honestly, it's a blessing. No battles over hair brushes, no cutting gum or playdoh out of it, no screaming heebeejeebies over hair washing.

They're 2, no one cares what sex they are.

My daughter had less hair at 2 than many newborns; at 3 it was a pixie cut. At nearly 5 it was a long bob, just about shoulder length, til she got creative with the scissors.

her best friend had waist length thick hair at the same age. All she wanted was hair like that.
