Car seats...

I couldn't really find an appropriate section to put this in so hope you can help here?...
My 'large' nearly 7 month ds2 has practically outgrown his rear facing car seat.
He now weighs over 9kg (21lb) and his head touches the top of his seat, his feet are pushing on the back of the car's seat, and the straps only just do up 'round him.
What can I do? Is he too young to go into a forward facing one? I have one that he's the correct weight for (from 9kg) but supposedly from 9 months. But there's no way I'll be able to still squeeze him into the other one til then.
Any suggegstions?
Thanks.

Thanks that is helpful.
I assume it means sitting unaided for about 30 mins?
My ds1 didn't sit that long until he was ready to crawl - about 10 months. My ds2 will never fit in the seat that long. Lol.

My son is 8 months old, and over 10kg now, and he has been in a front facing car seat for a few weeks.

He has sat since 5 months, and is ont he 98th centile for his height. He would not physically fit in the rear facing seat any longer, none of the combination seats fit in our car either.

I was advised to get a forward facing, but one that reclines back as far as possible so he was more laid flat.

I tried so hard to keep him in a rear facing seat, but there was nothing I could do, and was told it was getting dangerous in a rear facing seat.

had to post this [http://www.childcarseats.org.uk/types/index.htm ROSPA] advice as it clearly states once your childs head is higher than the top of the seat, you should move them up to the next stage car seat. I think the value of being rearward facing is then lost as the child's head is no longer being fully supported by the rearward facing seat. You could phone ROSPA for advice.

FWIW, I moved my daughter to a forward facing seat at 7 months when her head was above the top of of both the rearward facing seats we had. She is however, several centimetres above the 99.8th percentile so a very unusual case. I was also very sure that the way her head was lolling about in the rearward-facing seats was not safe. I also had the reassurance of knowing from some hospital visits she had that her skeleton had the maturity of a 10 mo+ and her muscle tone/strength is remarkable, not to say freakish .

I still felt sick with worry moving her so early but have to say I think I picked the lesser of two evils.

in bluenosesaint's defence I have to say that the advice is far from definitive and if you have a child who is out of the norm for height, you never feel you are making the right decision. I may have been wrong to move DD when I did, I certainly felt sick doing it when she was still so young, but it seemed like the least worst decision at the time.

I agree Gerrard, it was a hard decision, and one I agonised over for ages, but I also feel I made the least worst decision.

I agree with you all - thanks. I think you need to take into account all the information and safety advice - verses the individual child.
