Please can anyone help ?! In hospital abroad with sick baby ( graphic pictures)

Hi please if anyone can help,

my son has had bad eczema since a baby on his ankles and back of his knees and we have come on holiday abroad to Mallorca we have made sure to keep him out of the sun and his areas have been fine. However Monday morning noticed scabs appearing and I thought never seen that before. He then started to feel really warm but never went above 37, that night he was so so restless wouldn’t sleep and constant crying. Then in a midnight nappy change noticed out of nowhere scabs and oozing skin all over ! Called the hotel dr who told us to go to hospital.

The hospital was a private one and didn’t have a paediatric she said his chest seemed fine unlike the dr at hospital who worried us and we was sent to another hospital to see a baby dr. Anyway he also noticed sores in his mouth and throat ( which explains why he wasn’t so keen on solids yesterday)

he said the sores in his mouth is cowsackie? Which I’ve learnt is foot is mouth and the skin is impetigo ?

he sent us on our way with antibiotics for the skin (amoxicillin) and also told us to give him nurofen every 8 hour but a larger dose than usual. He’s hardly slept since we fetched him back only if we hold him and seems very unsettled.

ive rung my dr first thing and been waiting for a call back all day to make sure everything ok as the language barrier was difficult and all his documents are hard to read.

my questions
does anyone know if this is definitely impetigo and in England could a cream or Anything be prescribed?

we are due to fly home tonight (12 hours away) is this safe?

he’s completely moving his head away to solids , is there consequence to him being breastfed only for a couple days?

thank you any advice is appreciated

, so tired can’t sleep and just so worried he’s never been ill ( so much as a sniffle ) since he was a baby

also the pictures were last night and they have got worse since but seem to be more dry today and not open but now he has a few open sores on his face , thighs and neck

@coxesorangepippin thank you for your concern, it really is awful he’s never had so much as a sniffle in 9 months and absolutely breaking my heart seeing him like this. He’s just very unsettled trying to itch everywhere then working himself up to a cry. Hoping the dr can give us some cream tomorrow. He won’t go in his cot at all so hubby is sleeping now till 2 then I am having a few hours

the hospital dr said to come back if he sleeps more than usual but he’s pretty much slept all day with very short wake windows? So hard to know if ‘ unusual’ he basically had no sleep last night as was at the hospital

OP just keep a very close eye on the patches and make sure they're not spreading. DS2 had something called staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome when he was 10 days old and needed IV antibiotics. It's fairly uncommon I think (we had loads of medical students sent to look at DS) but can develop in those with poor immune systems.

Charlotteap · 10/10/2023 23:19

@LaBelleSauvage123 thank you very much we are keeping up to date with pictures like another poster mentioned. The patches look better in terms of nothing is ‘ open ‘ anymore they all look a lot more dryer ? But individual spots seem to be spreading he now has a few more down the leg and a few on his belly for instance but thank you will definitely keep an eye and hopefully our gp can give him something more tomorrow

So worrying for you - I wish you all the best for tomorrow.

Charlotteap · 11/10/2023 20:30

i thank everyone for there support. Not good news we went straight to hospital as his entire body pretty much became covered. The drs think he has the worse infected eczema they’ve ever seen. They are keeping us in for a few days and going to give him antibiotics intravenously, dads in the next room as they struggle to put a canula in. The worse thing I’ve ever seen. I’m in bits haven’t even been home straight into here from the plane and no sleep for two nights. But I know he’s in the best place just terrifying that they can’t tell me he’s he’s going to be ok. ‘ he should be but any infection carries complications’

After trying for 10 minutes and 4 nurses and 2 drs and him screaming non stop they couldn’t do it and are going to try again after he’d had a rest. This is horrific 😭

Oh OP, how awful for you all. No advice, just wanted to offer a virtual handhold. Flowers

SaltySeaCat · 11/10/2023 20:46

How are his eyes? Very unlikely but could it be Stevens Johnson Syndrome? I’ve had it and was covered from head to my knees in blisters. My eyes, mouth and other mucous membranes were affected too.
Hope you get some answers soon and he starts feeling better.

NealBrose · 11/10/2023 20:48

And whilst the screaming is awful, that tells you he is still strong despite what is going on. Doctors always worry much more about the quiet babies.

Verite1 · 11/10/2023 20:49

I don’t have any advice but just wanted to send you a virtual hand hold.

rcat74 · 11/10/2023 20:49

Oh you poor thing and your poor baby. He’s in the right place now and I hope will start to get better now x

peeinthepool · 11/10/2023 20:55

Poor you and baby. Sending hugs and prayers that he recovers quickly.

coxesorangepippin · 11/10/2023 20:55

Cannot give you enough sympathy op. Absolutely awful, you just feel beyond exhausted

He's in the right place and will be on the mend soon 💐💐

RosesAndHellebores · 11/10/2023 20:55

I assume they have used magic cream and suggested sedation to get the cannula in?

Ask to speak to the consultant in charge. When dd was tiny we were told utter gobshite by two registrars. Consultant took one look, diagnosed a bacterial ulcer and got her on the right antibiotics immediately. Bounced back within 36 hours.

Charlotteap · 11/10/2023 21:15

Thanks everyone really does help reading such lovely messages.

they tried the magic cream the second time and was shining something on the veins , he’s a very big boy for his age and they are saying they are really struggling to find a vein. The consultant is thinking an high dose of oral instead antibiotics instead which surely they’d have suggested first if that was best solution. They also say they can’t get a wetsuit wrap for the cream until the morning

despite being covered head to toe and now realising he can pick the scabs off , he is still laughing and smiling and hitting his rubber hammer against the wall

thank you again all I’ve had nothing but brilliant advice and support since DS was born. He’s my only baby and my god I didn’t realise you could love this much

How is he now @Charlotteap? He sounds completely gorgeous btw.

Charlotteap · 12/10/2023 15:06

@Charlingspont thank you for asking, he is feeling much better today. His skin is still horrendous his ankles and legs now look like he’s been dipped in acid 😭 but most importantly they’ve stopped spreading and are no longing leaking. The consultant is happy the infection is under control and can be controlled further at home.

he’s been such a brave little boy , we are currently in the car on the way home. So happy! Thank you everyone we have lots of creams, wraps and ointments so hoping he starts to feel better soon

added a picture to show what his body looks like now I can’t believe he’s not even cried today when he must be in so much pain!

and a picture to show how resilient he is !

This looks like the exact same thing my little boy had as a baby, in the same places. He was also very unwell in himself with a temperature, viral rash all over his body, not eating or drinking. Urgent treatment centre couldn’t decide whether it was impetigo or hand foot and mouth (or maybe both?) but within a few days both me and DH also got hand foot and mouth so it was that. We were given an antibiotic cream and oral antibiotics but I’m not sure whether they helped. It eventually cleared up but we had a real rough few days.

Charlotteap · 12/10/2023 16:07

@Moonshine160 sounds exactly the same as us. They seem to think he’s caught hand foot and mouth on holiday which has then made his immune system weak and the sores and his eczema have got infected. He’s on a strong dose of antibiotics and 4 different creams so hopefully he’s on the mend. He’s had a rough couple of days but as soon as we’ve got him home he’s started crawling around on his mat. Bless him

So glad to hear to hear he's feeling better!

Dinosaurus86 · 12/10/2023 22:27

Hi @Charlotteap, very glad he’s doing better. Just to say my DS had exactly the same thing when he was about 10 months. He also has eczema and we think caught it from swimming. Hospital couldn’t quite decide but seemed to think most likely hand foot and mouth. Was very frightening for a while but he did get through it fine. Only thing is that while I was ok, DP then caught it and ended up in hospital too, but he also gets severe eczema and is on medicine that weakens your immune system. I think adults are usually ok.

peeinthepool · 13/10/2023 07:06

So pleased to hear and what a gorgeous smile!

Charlotteap · 13/10/2023 12:44

@Dinosaurus86 the drs presumed my ds has picked it up in and out of the pool all week too. His eczema wasn’t even bad on holiday too surprisingly just all came out of nowhere. Good to know about adults usually being ok, husband has not felt very well since we got home , sore throat and aches so don’t know if that’s a coincidence. Hospital was still undecided of hfam started it or whether it is just infected eczema. He did start with a sore throat first though.

thank you everyone again, can’t believe how brave he is, he’s back to having normal wake windows and normal naps, this is his skin now which I can’t believe is actually way better than a few days ago.

Omg that looks sooo painful, what a poor little boy he must be very brave huh. And what a gorgeous boy too what a lovely smile. I hope he is feeling better soon

Charlotteap · 14/10/2023 13:52

@Lauren0401 thank you I know it’s awful to look and I can’t imagine how it feels for him. But what a world of difference being home has made
