Sausages in school

DS is 4 and started reception. We have been booking him in for dinners which he has enjoyed. Next week they are to have hot dogs and I'm a bit nervous as he has told me the school didn't cut up his sausages the week before. I am aware of a child in our area who died after choking on a sausage a few years ago so I'm always sure to cut DS sausages length ways if we are home or out. Should I speak to the school about whether they do this or not, I'm assuming they don't. If they don't would you still let your child have hot dogs in school or send a packed lunch that day? DS has never choked on a sausage but then I've always cut them up for him

To be honest I would leave it. Hotdogs are fun things to eat for a child and the sausage tends to be softer than a normal sausage.

Why not have one at home and see if he manages it ok?

Do you pre-chew his food at home too?

Myneighboursarewankers · 07/10/2023 19:07

Why are people such dickheads on here? People come here for advice. It might be silly to you but obviously isn’t to the OP unless she’s some kind of weird sausage troll which I doubt.

OP, at this age I would expect a child to be able to cut up their own food so maybe help dc at home to practice if they want it cut up?

Myneighboursarewankers · 07/10/2023 19:08

And to the miserable posters above, Maybe if you had a bit of sausage you’d be a bit less miserable 🤷‍♀️

PurBal · 07/10/2023 19:09

I've been cutting DS sausages into rounds for a while. He’s 2 and he can do it himself. Edit for clarity: he cuts up cool sausages with a toddler knife. He can’t use a knife and fork at the same time yet.

Zib · 07/10/2023 19:09

I get it OP. My dd choked on a grape when she was in Y2. I got it out but it was an awful, awful minute.

I’d go for packed lunch personally. Because I’ve been there and wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

And to the apps who suggest this means we chew our children’s food: we don’t have grapes in the house, now, and they’re all teenagers. DD’s brother watched as I gave her first aid, and no-one wants to eat grapes any more.

Thank you, I'm shocked by the responses so far, I'm a caring, slightly nervous, mother looking for support and advice. There are numerous stories of children choking on sausages and most guidelines say to cut for under 5s. My DS just turned 4 so I wasn't expecting the nastiness from fellow parents

I work in a primary school and the staff at lunch time go round and ask every child if they want help cutting up their food. I'm not sure if that's standard practice but it is in our school.

liveforsummer · 07/10/2023 19:12

Hotdogs are very soft. Show him how to cut it lengthwise himself. Certainly at our school all sausages are whole

Maybe it’s time to start teaching him to cut things up himself.

It does sound like you are quizzing him on how sausages are served at school, which suggests that you might be unusually anxious about food in some way.

TooBusyGazingAtStarss · 07/10/2023 19:14

I replied to the wrong comment sorry!

Guidelines advise to cut length ways not in rounds, the round side is perfect for getting stuck in the trachea

Honestly, teach him how to do it himself

Although hot dogs are softer than regular sausages and therefore less of a chocking rise, I would expect a school age child to be cutting up their own food especially soft things.

ClaraThePigeon · 07/10/2023 19:18

I don't know why so many people are being dicks to the OP. Yes a child can choke on anything but sausages and hotdogs are especially high risk due to the shape and texture. They're in the same category of risk as grapes in that respect and should be sliced lengthways for young children.

Haha perfect!

If you will be worried all day about it - send a pack lunch that day

MidnightOnceMore · 07/10/2023 19:20

@Janebloom your approach of cutting sausages lengthways is the advised one.

You will get is a lot of attacks because many people don't seem able to tolerate discussion about these type of things.

It was the same when the advice on weaning moved to six months - aggressive posts. Same when people asked about rear-facing car seats. Same when people discussed cutting up cherry tomatoes.

Lovethatforyouhun · 07/10/2023 19:21

I’m more concerned that they are feeding young kids such trashy over processed muck. But I’m one of “those” parents eeek!
Real sausages good, hot dog frankfurters bad lol

So many arseholes on here! Rounds of sausage and grapes are the biggest choking risk.

Send a packed lunch that day, or as other suggest maybe try teach him how to do it.
