Helping uni kid out financially?

My DD, second year, 19 says she is struggling on her maintenance loan + pip + allowance. I've already adjusted her allowance once. I can't afford to give her any more, however I may appeal to my mother.
Wondering what other parents do?

Is she on the full maintenance loan? Or do you top up to the full amount?

Livinghappy · 06/10/2023 20:08

After rent how much does she have left?
Can she work?.

Moneyspend · 06/10/2023 20:08

No, she's on minimum. Her allowance is £700 a month and she receives higher rate pip for anxiety, depression and ADHD.

Her rent is £900 per month all inclusive- it's London.

Would it be easier if you paid her rent and bills rather than giving her an allowance? If you are giving her £700 a month that would usually cover it I would think?

PosterBoy · 06/10/2023 20:14

Oh ok it doesn't cover it! I guess London would be £££. How different is it to the prices she expected to pay and budgeted for?
My kids didn't go anywhere near the south due to ££££ and our lack of! It was a family conversation.
If she decided to go for it, regardless, I would be a bit unsympathetic - sorry!

Draw up a budget, my parents calculated that after bills we’d have about £60 a week (20 years ago!) so we had enough for food and a night out, if we wanted to buy more we had to get jobs.

PinkFrogss · 06/10/2023 20:20

Does she get DSA?

Is that higher rate Daily living? If so that’s £101.75 a week, so £5,291 a year. Plus your £700 a month allowance that’s another day £6,300 a year assuming you’re giving that term time only so maybe 9 months a year.

Then minimum maintenance loan for London is £6,308 a year.

That’s nearly £18,000 a year. I’d be helping her budget.

I’m assuming rent is so high as she’s unable to flatshare due to MH conditions? If that’s the case I think she should consider moving university’s to a cheaper area, or living at home and commuting.

Although from what you’ve said it should be doable where she is, she’ll just have to cut her cloth.

Pigeonqueen · 06/10/2023 20:22

What is she spending on? Does she need help budgeting?

When you say she is on the "minimum", what do you actually mean?

Maximum for a student living away from home in London for 23/24 is £13,022

Are you giving her an allowance of £700 pcm year round? (£8400) Or do you stop in the vacations?

(I'm assuming that pip is defraying extra costs associated with her disability, and so doesn't really count against her basic costs)

Not sure if different in Wales but my dad is in London, rent £895 pm and his max maintenance loan is£13,500 or so. He / we can choose how much or how little of it to take this year he took half the maintenance and we pay half. So we pay him £585 pm and he gets the same from the maintenance via student loan.
So no it might not be enough ?

overwhelmed2023 · 06/10/2023 20:48

dS not dad sorry !

overwhelmed2023 · 06/10/2023 20:51

£1170 pm though I pay his phone and if he needs something like equipment like duvet etc

overwhelmed2023 · 06/10/2023 20:52

So how much is the pip per month

MammaTo · 06/10/2023 20:53

You need to sit down with her and do a budget before you give her more money.

I can appreciate she’s receiving the PIP for some very real reasons but normally it would be expected to get a little part time job for spends etc especially living in London. If you haven’t got the money to cover her yourself I personally wouldn’t ask my mum, living in London is really expensive and it’s something she needs to learn.

overwhelmed2023 · 06/10/2023 20:55

I ask him if he is overdrawn Regis though sbd will top him up if needed. Because £ 270 - £300 is not that much per month to live on or for books etc

junebirthdaygirl · 06/10/2023 20:59

Adhd can often lead to impulsive spending and poor money management. I know as my ds has a diagnosis. Could you do a budget and only transfer money weekly as in my experience money sitting there will be spend with no thought for tomorrow. Could she get a part time job?

GlacindaTheTroll · 06/10/2023 21:00

Just spotted the relevant bit of @PinkFrogss post.

If she's on minimum, then £6308 and so you'd be expected to make it up to at least maximum loan, so that's £6714 of the allowance (just over 9.5 months at £700 pcm) so if your £700 is paid year round, then that's £1686 over the maximum loan.

What are her London outgoings? It's not uncommon for the loan ceiling to be inadequate especially for students living out as COL and (in particular) energy price rises are difficult/impossible to cover.

Would she be able to find part time work?

MetaverseMavis · 06/10/2023 21:04

She needs a student job
