Tripp Trapp Newborn set?

Expecting DS2 soon. DS1 will be 2yo.

I was looking at the Tripp Trapp with Newborn set as I thought it would be handy to have somewhere to put the baby higher up so DS1 can run around and not have to be constantly reminded to be careful near the baby.

Would anyone recommend? And is the newborn bit fully washable? We might buy secondhand.

Yes you can wash it. We had it, I liked it for newborns and it was decent as a highchair, I appreciated being able to push it up to the table.

Overall though I would say that the Tripp Trapp wasn’t the best investment. You hear people saying that their 12YOs have them as their desk chair etc etc but actually it’s a bloody uncomfortable chair (the bargain ones from Ikea are more ergonomic) and from about 18 months old we found that DS actually sat nicely for meals on a normal dining chair without fuss. We gave it away a year ago and haven’t regretted it at all. So I don’t know that I would have justified the spend if I’d have known how little it would be used. With hindsight I could have stuck a baby bjorn bouncer on the table or something, bought the Ikea highchair and probably would have been just as happy!

We had one and it was great, DC2 could sit up with us at dinner which we all enjoyed. He'd always do loud poops :)

Ours was secondhand. Check it's compatible with your chair, there are different models and they don't all fit.

I ended up with somewhere to plop the baby in pretty much every room - bouncer, sleepyhead, mats etc as DC1 was 2.5 and often needed rapid intervention so needed to be able to put baby down quickly! I had high chairs in the kitchen so they could watch while I cooked.

I developed a canny trick of reading books to DC1 while making eye contact with DC2 in his bouncer and it would keep them both happy :)

I guess if you were relying on tripp trapp to keep baby out of the way while DC1 runs around, actually you might be increasing risk that DC1 climbs on the chair or knocks it and then DC2 could fall from a height - hard to knock tripp trapps over but not impossible.

I don't know about it being uncomfortable, DC are still using theirs and they're 4 and 6... DC1 does have a cushion on it though which slips off and gets filthy

I bought the newborn for my baby and it's been invaluable. He's 3 months now and I've used it non stop in the kitchen. I have two bigger ones so he can sit with them at the table when they eat / draw etc

We had one, and liked it. We were given the Tripp Trapp by a friend, but bought the newborn set new. It was really nice to be able to have the baby at our height when having dinner, and out of the way of the dog. The covers are all washable.

Re. longevity of the Tripp Trapp, I don't find it uncomfortable to sit on, it's just like a normal wooden chair. The advantage over the ikea highchair or normal dining chairs is that it also has an adjustable footrest, so your child's feet aren't just danging in the air, which is better for their posture and overall comfort.

Also look at the Hauck Alpha - very similar and about quarter the price, and I think it still looks aesthetically pleasing.

In terms of longevity, we had the Baby Dan version of the chair, sadly they don't do a newborn bit, but I sat on that chair to have my hair cut when my mobile hairdresser came here. The children used them until they were about 10 and 7 when we upgraded them both at the same time to dining chairs. The adjustable seat and footrest was brilliant and you can put a chair cushion on if the find it too hard although all the chairs in a school classroom are cushionless plastic.

Thank you, glad to see people have found it good.

DC1 is pretty chilled and sensible for a toddler so he wouldn’t try to climb on it or anything, I just think it would be nice for him to still have his play space without the baby being at floor height all the time. And would be nice to sit at the table together.

Will have a look at the Hauck Alpha too, although just seen another thread this morning saying it has a bar at an awkward height when you’re using it as a high chair.

I love the tripp trapps, I sit in one when I work from home - makes me sit properly instead of hunch over the laptop. DTs still use them when they are doing their homework!

YouveGotAFastCar · 05/10/2023 10:35

We've got a Tripp Trapp. Definitely worth the investment here!

newhere24 · 05/10/2023 10:40

Love our tripptrapps. We‘ll soon sell one of ours as oldest is now 10 and doesn’t need it anymore to sit at a standard height table properly.
They had tons of use, we‘ve had the baby set (very useful with an older child as baby is out of the way!), the toddler set and now just two plain tripptrapps (they are 6 and 10 years old). best investment ever!

We've got the hauck version of the Tripp Trapp with the newborn attachment - managed to pick up both second hand - really great so far, the newborn part also converts into a floor bouncer too which means one less piece of baby equipment to find space for!

That would be handy as we need a bouncer too. Is it easy to take on and off?

@DuploTrain so easy it's 2 clicks to take it off the high chair part and you slide the bouncer bar onto it to convert it to a floor bouncer. Need expanding walls for such a little person 😅

fearfuloffluff · 05/10/2023 11:05

The reason I got multiple bouncers, chairs etc is that by the time you slide the bouncer off the whatever, DC1 would have knocked over the plant pot/eaten the old biscuit/wiped snot on the wall etc :) so needed somewhere to plonk baby in every room. Your DC may be better behaved!

All plant pots have been removed long ago 🙈
Will definitely have multiple options though!
