bowel probs with DD1 delaying training

Anyone else got an older on with strange poo's? She spends the day, for example, straining and doing little bits here and there (quite liquid, so annoying that it's staining the cloths quite badly) and then she'll do a big poo during the night (sometimes that day sometimes the next day, so she ends up straining for 2 days!!) It's all a bit irritating as it's delaying potty training (she'll hide in a corner for most of the day and refuses to use the potty if she's only straining )

I'm not entirely sure what to do, the Hv has said to just keep trying but it's really getting us nowhere now

Sounds like she might be constipated, kyala.
The 'liquid poo', seeps around a blockage of poo. I would say go to the doctor, and get help before this turns into a problem

Bumping for the late evening crew for more help

Any abdominal pain? what's her diet like? How old is she? how long has she had the problem? Sounds like constipation. A warm bath sometimes helps things along, as does ripe pears.

Ok thanks, the HV didn't seem to think it was much of a problem but there you go!

She has been worse than this before, with constipation, but this has settled into this routine now and I'm not happy that this has been going on for longer than expected (thought it might have been a tummy upset or something). Have ordered pears (have tried prunes/grapes etc but nothing seems to be working so far)
Will speak to Hv again on Thursday about it.

Recently went to the hospital about DD2 for skin prick testing and she's definately allergic to milk so have started DD1 on Soya for cereal etc so we'll see how that goes too

Soya might well make her go

Esp if the milk has been causing constipation as the soya is very sweet

my friends little girl suffers bdly with this it is hardened poop thats been in the intestine for a while and the fresh poop that is hydrated is squeezed out with no effort from your dd and so it leaks ..its very uncomfortable and cn make a child quite poorly my friends dd has to go to hossy for enemas ......she did suggest coffee tho??

dippydeedoo · 09/03/2008 00:33

i think psychologically itd be v traumtic to be doing poops ,cos the poops shes trying for arent coming yet liquidy poop comes with no effort or control....just thought has it ever been ok? maybe she hs sphincter muscle problem in that the the poop cant be pushed out v easily?

kyala · 09/03/2008 09:53

I can't remember when it all started but she definately had normal movements when she was a baby/toddler, she had constipation last year but I can't remember when it turned into this weird routine.

I don't think I'll be trying coffee (she's got far too much nervous energu as it is! lol)

Hi
just been reading your threads on bowel problems with little one. My duaghter was going everyday with no probs. Completely dry during the day with no accidents, but now holding onto bowel movements (for as long as a week). She says that it hurts and we have a real drama before she goes, lots of running around and crying and this can be over a couple of days. She insists on wearing a nappy to poo despte having many successful occasions with the loo. Not sure if she has had a painful time in the past and this has scared her or it does actually hurt, once she finally decides she can hold it no longer she goes but it is very quick and does not cry in pain. The crying seems to come before when she is trying to hold it in. HV is never available, I think she is a virtual one for my area, just a name!
Although daughter has been dry in day for about 8 mths, her nappy at night is till absolutley soaked, so also don not know how long to leave it before I take it off at night. She is 3. Older daughter was dead easy had it all sorted by 3.
Any body got any ideas over the bowel movement problems.

LollypopzMummy · 11/03/2008 12:36

Mitchelltct Not sure on that one, I think the best thing to do is try and get her to understand that it's hurting because she's holding it in, and if it's not hurting to go then it'll make life easier to go more than to hold it all in.
I can't imagine the pian she must go through, but it does sound like this could be a psychological episode rather than a biological one, especially if it's not hurting to poo.

I'm going to try the NHS direct website and see if they've got any suggestions for my DD1, maybe you should too.
I have thought about looking for a children's laxative, I've tried just about every fruit/vegetable that's meant to help but nothing's changing )

Thanks, funnily enough this week she has been going everyday with little fuss, just in a nappy. This is brilliant because I think as she starts to go more regular, she will become more relaxed about it with a bit of luck.
My friend has a lot of problems with her son and he is prescribed sennakot for children and lactulose (you can buy this over the counter). Hope all goes well!

FlippinNora · 11/03/2008 22:31

My middle one has this problem - been constipated since weaning (now 3) and has been on laxatives. Recently started doing liquid poos around a big blockage (lots of straining and staining!) and had one suppository which cleared out an enormous, hard black poo and then this was followed by movicol and lactulose daily to keep poo soft. Terrified of pooing on the toilet or potty although wees are fine. Have been referred to paediatrician after several visits to GP since xmas. Maybe you should try GP in first instance? Good luck.

LollypopzMummy · 12/03/2008 14:46

Wow Fliipin That sounds about the same as what DD1 is doing now, I do hope it doesn't get to having to put her on regular laxatives I kind of hoped it'd just be a dietry thing and we'd be able to just change her diet a bit. I don't know, got HV tomorrow anyway and will make appt for GP whilst I'm there.
