down side to bunk beds is when they are ill also I think 4 years old is too young to go on the top and unless you hide the ladders they tend to go up there during the day and play, and sometimes fall off!

if you have a truckle bed, is it for occasional use or is it a feasible option to have someone sleep on it as their own bed?

wheelsonthebus · 06/03/2008 14:38

sorkycake - its for sleepovers, and when my mother comes!

does it not take a proper mattress then?
just wondered if i had another boy before we extend the house could he not sleep on a truckle bed?

ChopsTheDuck · 06/03/2008 14:48

I been looking into this, because I have three boys who need to share a room. So I need bunk and trunkle. Some trunkles do take normal mattresses, some come with a foam thing.

If you've got room to pull out the truckle then that's what I'd go for. Reason is we've got a midsleeper with tent underneath. (DS had it for 6 birthday, officially considered its not safe till age 6)

Advantages:
Provides storage and play space below
Its fun to play under and on

Disadvantages:
The fun gets out of hand
Horrid climbing out of bed in the dark after nightmares or needing a wee
Difficult to change the sheets, as its in a corner (has to be)
Not handy for me to sit on at story-time, or climb up for a cuddle

And another bonus of truckle. If DC is a bit poorly, you can pop onto it and sleep beside them.
You could always sleep on the bottom of bunks, but do you really want a vomiting child above you?

Just one problem I found with truckles is that the top bed is higher than most normal singles, and my DD fell off hers a couple of times because she couldn't get down safely when she was small.

But she grew and the beds (M&S) are still in use. Even my parents find the mattresses comfy.

Mine have enjoyed bunk beds a lot, they have been OK in the top bunks from 4. It's an indoor climbing frame/den/tent/cave.
