Rear facing prams

Hi all, FTM mum here to a 5 month old. She is becoming too big for the flat pram attachment but the stroller seat we have is only forward facing and I feel like she would prefer to be facing me. Just wondering in general how long did you have your baby in a rear facing seat and what age? Or did they prefer to face out?

My DS is 12 months old. We have the Oyster 3, so it’s really easy to turn the chair around. We swap it depending on activity. Walks and popping to the shops he faces us so we can chat. Trips to the farm or aquarium he faces outwards. He doesn’t seem to have a preference either way.

14 month old here, he still faces us most of the time so we can "chat"! Unless, as with the poster above, or would be more beneficial for him to face forward. We just turn it round if so.

Thanks for the replies. Might look into getting a second hand stroller with rear facing options then!

Dd was in world facing at around 9 months because she kept peeking around the sides, so thought it would save her the neck ache! She was nosy pretty early on 😂

Are you 100% sure your stroller can't be turned around to face you? Most travel systems have that flexibility

We only had a YoYo so both of mine were facing out from 4/5 months when they outgrew the newborn pack. They were fine with it! Have you actually tried yours or is it just a hunch that she may not like it? Also have you got a car seat option you could try instead? Eg there is for the YoYo if your infant carrier is compatible

Yes I only have a travel stroller that has a pram attachment so the normal seat is only World facing. When pregnant it seemed like a good idea to get a lightweight pram due to our lifestyle but obviously my lifestyle has changed now Grin

You know I haven't tried my baby in the stroller seat yet. Good idea with just trying the car seat as a facing me option. I don't put the car seat on the stroller often as the car seat is a faff to get on and off but maybe with more practice that would be the answer, thanks.

I'd get a second hand buggy with decent suspension that faces you and save the other one for travelling. You use it every day it's worth paying for. You can get it professionally cleaned if you need to. Baby will be so much happier being able to see the world at its age!

Don’t use the car seat as a pram op, they should only really be in it for I think up to 2 hours as an absolute maximum with a 30 min break (I think) it’s not really a good option.

what lie flat pram were you using? Can you get the seat attachment for that rather than jumping to the lightweight world facing pram?

That’s for newborns isn’t it? I don’t think it applies when they’re old enough to sit in an upright stroller seat, because an upright seat is an upright seat. It would make absolutely no sense that they could be in the pram upright all day but only the car seat for 2 hours when the car seat is definitely the better supported and more reclined of the 2. Also presumably you will be getting them out for nappy changes, to sit in the highchair for their lunch, to have a bottle, for a little crawl about etc so it’ll never be that long continuously.

RecklessBlackberries · 04/10/2023 16:34

My son had to move to the seat when he was around 4 months as he outgrew the bassinet. He was parent facing for about a month or so, then world facing. He got a lot less crabby when he was world facing, he clearly wanted to see what was going on around him.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 04/10/2023 16:52

Both of mine preferred facing us more or less until they were reassured to give up the pushchair.

Excited101 · 04/10/2023 17:20

No, it’s 30 mins for a newborn. Car seats are really designed with in car safety as the main priority, they’re not a good position for baby generally- spine and airways particularly. All the manufacturers will tell you their time limits so it’s a known ‘thing’.

stargirl1701 · 04/10/2023 17:40

We had the Stokke Xplory and stayed parent facing the entire time.

AegonT · 04/10/2023 23:02

We kept the pushchair parent facing till both mine turned 2. However DD1 was in the childminder's forward-facing double buggy 5 days a week from before 1 years old. We have a travel buggy for DD2 that we've used occasionally since birth and that's forwards only. I don't think it matters if you talk to them lots at other times and they aren't in it for hours a day.
