Anyone have any genius tips for teaching a young kid to pair socks?

DD is nearly 4, in preschool going to school next year, and I’m really keen to capitalise on her enthusiasm for learning new tricks and teach her as many ‘looking after herself’ skills as possible e.g. she’s mastered buttons and is nearly there with zips (though keeps pulling them out of alignment which is quite aggravating to watch 😂). This morning she was pleading to be allowed to help with sorting a clean basket of washing - obviously big yes please from me on that as it’s all I ever seem to do, so I gave her the socks to pair, but her little fingers struggled to grasp the folding the cuffs down movement to keep the pairs together. Should I just persist with practising that, or has anyone got an easier way? I know there are gadgets that do it for you but I want to keep it organic and not buy anything new if possible! Anything else that people have taught little kids to do that’s saved them hassle, esp in the mornings? TIA Smile

Clothes pegs?

Why will pairing socks help with the morning rush? Surely she'll be unpairing them to get ready? She'll get there with practice. Motor skills are developmental which means they arrive at the right time and not before. Let her practice like you are doing, that's all you can do really.

Well, if she puts on sock A in the morning, it will help with locating and putting on sock B if they were paired in the first place. Don’t most people pair socks? It will foster independence in the form of gradually learning to sort her own laundry, including putting it away properly with pairs of things kept together. On the same topic, I wondered if there were any other skills I should think about teaching her while I’m at it. I doubt she’ll have 3-year-old style enthusiasm for dressing herself and helping with laundry forever.

I used to get mine to put the top of the two socks together, and see there were four bits at the top, then practice pulling one bit over the other to create a sock ball. They then used to enjoy bowling them up and down then hallway, but that's another story! 🤣

This is exactly what I was after! A sock ball sounds ideal but also not, for the exact reason you state…

Sorry should say pull one bit over the other three, not explaining very well!

Cornishbelle · 02/10/2023 11:29

Yes pros and cons! 😂

Clemally · 02/10/2023 11:29

Mine puts one sock inside the other, works for her.

Oh no, I knew what you meant - this morning I had her laying one sock on another and trying to pull two corners over the other sock’s corners, but it’s one of those things that comes so naturally to me it’s hard to teach it to someone to whose hands/coordination it’s entirely foreign!

I'm not sure 4 year old fingers will have that dexterity/strength, maybe start with putting one sock inside the other one for now?

And then when you're buying school socks, get them all exactly the same so it's easy to get a pair out of the drawer without having to think about it!

Stripeypyjamas · 02/10/2023 11:31

Only buy one colour of sock. Dont bother pairing.

She would be baying for my blood!

Buy all the socks the same so need to pair them at all! DD has all white ones (with a heart inlay pattern from John Lewis so they can easily be identified) and we just throw them all in the draw individually and she grabs 2.

Tip the laundry on the bed, shout “sock matching game!” and follow behind them folding them together. Like playing Snap with socks, it works for my DC anyway Grin

Maybe the skill of buying multiple pairs of identical socks so they don’t need to be paired up? Or, as one of my nephews learned, not giving a rats about wearing matching socks? Even now at 35 he wears odd socks!

Oh yes she has identifying the matching pairs down! I just want to exploit her labour a bit further 😂 I’m slightly envious of those whose children will accept the same colour socks daily - DD has a mental catalogue of which socks and hair bobbles complement which details of colour in her individual items of clothing. Then she puts a ratty fancy dress costume over the whole outfit every day without exception.

Ah, I see. I’m no help then Grin my 9yr old can do it but it’s beyond the 5yr old at the moment.

Do people have sock drawers full of unpaired socks?! I can’t decide if that would stress me out further or save me hours of heartache. I pretty much exclusively wear the same white Nike socks every day but I still always pair them!

As a temporary solution until she learns to fold them over, could you fill a drawer with paper cups and get her to put the pairs in each one?

CurlewKate · 02/10/2023 12:12

Just don't end up doing what I did. My ds LOVED pairing socks-he used to say "I'm looking for this sock's friend." So cute. Until one day he said "Oh no, these socks can't be friends-they're different colours..."🤣

InTheRainOnATrain · 02/10/2023 12:35

Is yours still at nursery then? Once they’re at school they can’t really choose their socks- ours are white for sports/summer and grey tights for winter. So it’s easy just to buy bulk buy the same white ankle socks and she’ll wear them without complaint at the weekend too, probably because wearing own clothes is enough of a novelty in itself 🤣

InTheRainOnATrain · 02/10/2023 12:38

And the sock strictness extends to the school nursery uniform where mine have been since aged 2! So I definitely can’t be doing with weekend socks 🤣

Yes, preschool provision at a nursery with no uniform so still a while to go til she relinquishes coloured socks. If her father is anything to go by I suspect the love of matching accessories whenever possible will endure though!

This comment makes me think we have too little drawer storage and/or far too many socks 😂 it’s a great idea though!
