What age did your child stop using a pram/pushchair/stroller?

My child is 15 months I hate not parent facing with her stroller but if they ate going to stop using it at say 2 I don't want to go through the effort of buying another pram.

Both of them, 4 and a half.
But I rarely used the car for errands or shopping so they had to keep up with me and I could carry bags in the buggy.

shakeitoffsis · 30/09/2023 12:08

2.5. They had zero interest in being in the pram after this age.

RockAndRollerskate · 30/09/2023 12:08

DS1 started using a buggy board at 21 months as his brother was born.
DS2 is now 21 months and refuses it more often than not so we use the trike

My oldest stopped at 2.5 whereas my youngest clung on and only stopped now at 3.5.

Got rid just before Dts turned 4, by that point we only used it for very long days out or to cart shopping / bags around in.

Needmorelego · 30/09/2023 12:11

My daughter is small (so little short legs) so we never got rid of the buggy completely until 5 and a half. By then we were onto a really basic "umbrella" style.

IncomingTraffic · 30/09/2023 12:13

I haven’t used the buggy for several months now - DS recently turned 3.

And that’s without having any access to a car. He’s fine walking or on a scooter/bike as appropriate.

TulipsTulipTulips · 30/09/2023 12:15

3.5, when she stopped napping.

But mine could go parent or world facing, and she only wanted to look out from about a year. So I probably wouldn’t replace yours on that basis.

MsChatterbox · 30/09/2023 12:15

My youngest is 3. Still using it as she can't go the speed I need her to go for most things! When we have time and it's just us two then I don't bring it. But things like school run, quick tesco trip before playgroup etc I can't be faffing about!

Ilovemydoggie · 30/09/2023 12:15

4 as we walked everywhere, but mainly so I could use it for shopping by that stage.

Lavender2021 · 30/09/2023 12:15

It all depends what you do. I walk over a mile to nursery so will use a pushchair until school at 4.5 years.

We still use it if out and about all day as it quicker but it's getting less if popping into a retail park. It depends how quickly I need to get jobs done and don't want a child touch and looking at everything now at 3.5 years.

If it's a busy area I still use the pushchair as it's safer. It depends what type of child you have, some are runners and others not. Mine isn't a runner.

I have a large pushchair so no issues with space and legroom but it is world facing not sure she would want to look my way anyway now.

Depends on your lifestyle - we don’t drive so dc was still using a buggy sometimes until 3+ (esp as handy for shopping etc - there was a difficult stage after that involving walking holding small child’s hand and carrying the shopping rather than slinging it on the buggy handles!). If you drive most places and just do short walks then you’d probably expect to be able to give it up sooner.

MsChatterbox · 30/09/2023 12:15

Check marketplace if you don't want to spend a lot. I got a really good oyster system for £30!

PuttingDownRoots · 30/09/2023 12:24

Depends on child and lifestyle. DD1 barely used it after her 2nd birthday. She was a duracell bunny, impossible to tire out and could walk for miles.

DD2 was more lazy... plus we were often on a tight schedule with school runs, extra curricular activities etc so was using it until 4ish. (For example... we would walk the mile to school/preschool, then I'd pick her up to go home from preschool, then back to school to pick up her sister and home, then to a club later on, pick up and drop off... it could be 8-10 miles total a day, but we did often using the bike/trailer for these journeys )

CoodleMoodle · 30/09/2023 12:25

DD was 4y4m and would've stayed in longer if I'd let her, but DS was born and needed it! I let her stay in the buggy for a bit longer anyway, because I found it handy to hold on to when I was very pregnant.

DS would've been about 4y2m. He's a July born and I said he had to be out of it before he started school, so we just stopped using it during the Summer and that was it.

Both were quite happy to be out of it, I think I missed it more than them!

I myself do a lot of walking and take the bus a lot. Mine is 2 and I still use mine but only when taking long trips. I’ve been encouraging her to walk more herself but if it’s a long trip there’s the issue of her wondering a lot, grabbing things off the shelves at stores and her being at the age of not quite having enough stamina to handle certain distances and getting tired. So there’s that to consider but if you have a car that might not be an issue for you.

Sometimes it’s just for my sanity’s sake. She’s old enough to sit in her own seat on the bus but does not quite understand that she can’t just get up whenever she wants because otherwise she will go flying. But if I tell her that she’ll sometimes start to fuss and bother the other passengers which is why a stroller seems to be best in public transit still.

I feel like by 3 most of these issues will be resolved and we will probably need it far less or not at all. But right now she still kind of wants to run across the street, lacks awareness or a sense of danger so some walks are a bit of a chore and the stroller helps with that.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/09/2023 12:31

DS1 2.5( very energetic boy who wouldn't stay in it after then)
DS2( late Walker who was a little lazy)
DS3 4( August born Petite)
I don't drive and am disabled so sometimes I used it for support myself
Every child is different so don't get rid just because you think you should

User174085934 · 30/09/2023 12:32

About two, he liked to walk everywhere

uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/09/2023 12:32

DS2 was 3.9

YouveGotAFastCar · 30/09/2023 12:36

My DS is 21 months and MUCH prefers to walk than use the pram at the moment, and he is a pretty good walker. But I'd hate to be without one, it's useful for when he gets tired, or we need to get somewhere faster, or I've got a lot to carry. He prefers the pram to the stroller although we do have both.

I think it'll have legs for a while yet; the refusal is probably just a phase.

Caspianberg · 30/09/2023 12:37

We still use one with 3 year old. Not daily, not for local walks. But the off road jogger is super handy for long days out and long walks, and the travel compact one we still take travelling when more likely to be exploring more, more walking late in evening or when hot.

However, I would say ours didn’t parent face after 9kg which was around 1 year old. I did dither about needing an alternative to lay longer parent facing but Ds got used to facing forward quickly and it was fine. The seat size in parent facing is usually much smaller also so won’t last as long. With our large three wheeler it’s like a fabric seat and could easily fit a 5-6 year old if needed

This is exactly where I am at. It’s like we could do without it if we had to but life would be a lot harder for myself and I would just rather have it available!

Mammyloveswine · 30/09/2023 12:40

Round about 2.5 but occasionally our eldest in stroller if i has the baby in thr carrier. Youngest was just turned 2 at start of lockdown so never really bothered after then.

AvengedQuince · 30/09/2023 12:41

Around the time he turned two, we had a car but frequently walked anywhere local, up to a mile or so at that age. He loved to get about on his balance bike.

storypushers · 30/09/2023 12:42

About 22 months and 20 months. Some reception kids round here still in strollers so a vast range.
