3.5 year old coughing at night

My daughter has been sick on and off for the last few weeks with a cold, no temperature or anything and most of the symptoms have died down but she's still coughing loads at night. She is waking multiples times a night and coughing a lot. She is obviously very tired during the day because of it.

The only other time I've noticed her coughing is if she running around a lot, it will bring the cough on. Is there anything I could to help her at nighttime so she can get some sleep. Feel awful for her.

I'd probably get her to the GP if it's lingering. Coughs do hang about but if it's been more than a few weeks I'd want to get her checked- they may prescribe an inhaler to help and always best to be on the safe side!

Sounds like she needs to be checked for asthma and an inhaler.

Ds2 was exactly the same at that age. I've never heard a more horrendous cough on a child just after a virus. He also coughed just after heavy exercise or sudden hot/cold temp changes.

He was given a blue inhaler and a tentative diagnosis of 'might be asthma but we'll monitor and see'. It lasted a few years but he hasn't needed the inhaler since he was about 7 (now 13 and fine).

We had this with DS last year - he had a cold and every symptom cleared except the cough. We tried everything but eventually took him to the GP. He gave us a blue inhaler and said to give it to DS if and when he had a bad cough. It does seem to help.

Yes my intuition was that it could be asthma but my partner thinks it's post nasal drip because she was sick..I'm not really sure, she has been definitely not herself during the day more irritable and tired. If it was asthma would she be coughing a lot during the night?

Also her room does tend to be cold, should I heat it up before bed? I've raised the top of her bed to see yhat will help and using a humidifier also.

And yes the coughing when exercising is a new thing, I have never noticed her do that before..I wonder if the cold weather has triggered something
