Is it weird or perfectly reasonable - I just don't know

So my friend's partner (54f)'s DS turns 18 at the end of the month and as a very generous present she is paying for him and a few of his friends to go to Ibiza in a few weeks for their first lads holiday abroad. Fair enough and as I say, very generous of her.
The issue is that she is planning on going on the holiday with them and I think it's a bit weird.
My friend explained to me that his partner will be staying in a different hotel from the lads, and as some of them won't have turned 18 yet, she is just going in case they get into any trouble so she is only minutes away from them should they need her. The lads have all grown up in a quiet market town and are all brought up well so they probably aren't as street smart as some kids who have grown up in a big city, etc. (I do also think it's just an excuse for her to go on holiday as well but that's by-the-by).
I don't have any kids but I do understand it must be nerve wracking letting go of those apron strings and letting your child go on their first lads holiday abroad, but is it just me that thinks this is a bit weird and that poor DS is likely to get ribbed by his mates that mummy has to come on holiday with them?

I think it's fine. Particularly as some of the boys will be under 18.

Free holiday? I doubt it and their parents might be a bit relieved if they've been a bit sheltered.

NuffSaidSam · 26/09/2023 19:35

I think it's fine.

And she doesn't need an excuse to go on holiday, she can go whenever she wants if she's paying for it (which she is!).

If she was staying in a villa with them it would be weird.

Not another hotel in the same resort, fine.

Doingmybest12 · 26/09/2023 19:40

I think it's a good thing. I am sure the friends would refuse to go if they had a problem with it. I'd have been delighted if my 17 year old was going away for a holiday to this sort of destination with friends for the first time.

I think rationships between parents and older teens are often more accepting these days .

It's fine if she's in a different hotel - it's just a safe known adult nearby in case of any emergencies. She can enjoy the sun and relax knowing that if her DS gets into any bother she's right there!

It would be weird if she was planning on going out drinking with them, but as she's not, it seems like a good compromise.

I don't think it's necessary to do it but it's not a problem if she wants to.

I think it’s weird that you’re so bothered by it. They’re at that weird age where it’s a gray area because they may be legally adults but they aren’t quite grown up in the head yet as they aren’t experienced with the world yet.

SoSad44 · 26/09/2023 19:56

I don’t see an issue with this. What generous parents

paulhollywoodshairgel · 26/09/2023 19:56

I think if I was a parent of one of the other boys I'd fell better knowing she was around. As long as she's not trying to go out with them on a night, necking fish bowls and raving 😂😂😂

I'm not so bothered by it. I just thought it was a bit weird that's all. I see it from the lads point of view I guess and think he'd be embarrassed that his mum was going with them.

Yeah I suppose seeing it from the other parent's point of view they would feel better knowing she was around.
I can't be sure that she's not going to try going out with them on a night necking fish bowls and raving though ! 🤣🤣🤣

I keep hearing Adam Goldberg thinking about his ‘Smother!’
However, I do actually think it’s fine, it’s not the same hotel so there is plenty of distance. It’s not something my teen would allow though.

It was going to be a surprise for his birthday apparently so I'm not sure DS even knows about it yet! He might not allow it either, free holiday or not 🤣
