9 week old nap advice

FTM here.

My 9 week old boy has always slept well through the night, in his next to me crib. When I mean well, I mean he doesn’t fuss and will go straight to sleep at night time. Only waking for a feed/nappy change.

Day time is a different story, he will not nap unless he’s held. I can rock/soothe him into a deep sleep, put him down, then 10 mins later he’s crying to be held again.

I don’t mind this, as they are precious times and he wont want me forever. I can use my carrier to get jobs done etc whilst he sleeps.

I guess I just find it odd he’s ok at night time, just not the day?

Will he eventually be ok with napping independently in the day time? Are there any tips on promoting this?

I was slightly confused about advice on the internet. I.e exposing newborn to light/sounds in the day so they know the difference between day and night. But then I’ve read other posts about baby should be going down for naps in a dark room.

Any advice please :)

Every baby is different... but at 9 weeks I imagine they're still getting used to being in the world.

Things will change so much over the next few weeks - so I'm not sure any tips or tricks will help (they might now, but then won't again in a few weeks).

Personally I gave up on cot naps and just did contact (watched a lot of Netflix in the newborn days). Mine is 2 now and started doing naps independently at about a year.

Highly recommend Lindsay Hookway on Instagram for holistic sleep stuff if you're looking for professional advice.

Good luck!

Doesn’t sound that unusual. Mine slept quite well in her Moses basket and then Next to Me at night but preferred to contact nap during the day. I opted to just enjoy the cuddles and chance to sit down but didn’t get much done. This went on until about 8 months old when she started staying asleep when transferred to the cot. Just do what works for you. It’s best if they can nap around normal household noises (and makes it easier to keep them with you for the first 6 months) but if it just doesn’t work you can also try the dark room.

OP, this post could have been written by me! My 10wko is very very similar and wouldnt nap anywhere other than on someone, sling prefered.
Eventually around week 4/5 I did want to get on with things, and also prepare her for daycare (she only start at 5 months but still), so I just persisted with the cot.
First just one nap a day, then 2, etc. Now most of her naps are in the bassinet.
The problem is that she will sleep for a very short amount of time in it, initially no more than 20 mn, then gradually it extended to 30... now on a good day I get a 45mn nap in, but the average remains around 35... Not sure why, as in the sling she can sleep for hours and hours without waking.

Babies get used to what they're exposed to I think, just keep trying the cot, for a nap or 2 a day, and the rest of the time against you, to ensure he gets sufficient sleep during the day
