Tonies box for 2 yo?

Really interested in these as my DS loves books so I like how the characters tell a little story when you pop them on and thought it may get him used to headphones listening to stories etc

it would be for his 2nd birthday which is the same week as Christmas! We have a big present for each and we’ve got him a balance bike for Christmas so thought this could be his big birthday present

is he too young for it? But then again we kind of buy stuff to last as long as possible because of his birthday being close to Christmas

so my DH said even if he enjoyed it from next spring/summer etc?

for example we got him a plush animal wooden rocker for his 1st birthday and now he’s just started enjoying it!

Ah the trials and tribulations of birthdays close to Christmas’ for parents haha!

We have one for our 2yo and its a huge hit!

YourNameGoesHere · 25/09/2023 06:33

Not too young at all but I'd honestly get a yoto instead. Longevity wise and feature wise the yoto is a far more logical choice. DS got one at 2 and it's still used almost daily 2 years later.

My daughter just turned 3 but we bought her box for Christmas last year. She absolutely loves it. We use it in the car, she has it on as background noise or sometimes just sits and chills, listening to her tonies.

I agree. These are great but the Yoto is better. We got one for my son when he was 4 and I wish we'd got it sooner. He uses it everyday. I'm pregnant and hoping to get one for the baby just for the sleep noises but think they'd be great for a toddler.

Plumful · 25/09/2023 06:38

Why is the yoto better? Would love your thoughts as I’m also debating which to buy.

user159 · 25/09/2023 06:40

We have the Yoto mini. It's amazing - we didn't need the night light feature and wanted to be able to use it with headphones whilst travelling etc. the cards are reasonably priced and you can upload them to the app on your phone so I can play them through my Bluetooth speaker or car if we haven't got the Yoto. Not sure if the tonies box is the same.

My four year old got it for Christmas when she was three and we use it everyday!

StaySpicy · 25/09/2023 06:40

Our DS got a Tonie at 2 (also Xmas birthday). He still listens to it every night and he's nearly 5! We also have some lovely recordings of family members singing and reading stories. He has headphones for it which he uses in the car (I get paranoid of strangulation when he's asleep so not at night) and he got the hang of how it all works quickly.

Shouldhavebutdidnt · 25/09/2023 06:41

I got my DD a Yoto at 2 and it has been great. I thought about the Tonie but the Yoto has the potential to last until she is a teenager because it doesn’t have the little figures.

Yoto have a massive range of stories for all ages & she has worked her way through Juli Donaldsons to factual cards. It is also pretty simple to make your own cards either with family members reading stories (great if they live far away) or using the free library audiobooks or audible.

Overall it’s great & we have the standard Yoto and the mini

TheCurtainQueen · 25/09/2023 06:43

The yoto player is MUCH better.

The features are vastly superior than a tonies box iny opinion.

It has podcasts, a radio, a clock, a night light etc as well as it's primary purpose. Plus it has much more longevity due to the types of cards available and the fact many children would grow out of using the tonies figures Vs a card.

To be honest all the people I know who got a tonies box to begin with have changed to a yoto and every single one of them complained that the tonies figures quickly just became toys instead of being used for the player.

LividHot · 25/09/2023 06:46

Everyone will tell you Yoto is better.

I dunno about that because I got a Tonie. My little boy loves it and it gets used every bedtime. He’s 3.5 now and still mad for it.

He's still very little though. As I said everyone I know who started with a Tonie box moved onto a yoto because it has more longevity when your child goes past the very young child stage.

LividHot · 25/09/2023 06:52

Maybe, @YourNameGoesHere

But for something that he’s used daily for over a year already, I feel like I’ve had my money’s worth. I wouldn’t mind if I needed to replace any other toy that’s been so well used, so I won’t mind when the time comes to replace Tonie 🤷‍♀️

Which is fine if you can afford to replace it but realistically these days a lot of people can't.

Therefore it seems sensible to advise people there is an option with more longevity before they get a tonies box spend a fortune on figures and then wish they'd heard of a yoto player and just brought that and the cards instead.

modgepodge · 25/09/2023 06:56

He’s definitely not too young, go for it…though I would also say get a Yoto instead of a tonie box!

longevity, the individual stories are cheaper on Yoto, if you lose a card on Yoto you can make a copy (like burning a CD) in the app, and from what I’ve heard the set up on Yoto is much easier. It has the gro clock type function and nightlight . Yoto are adding new features all the time based on customer demand (though tbf I don’t follow tonie or read much in to it so they may also be doing this!)

smallshinybutton · 25/09/2023 06:57

I went for yoto mini - Great for car journeys and my youngest step child likes borrowing it too (age 11).

Embelline · 25/09/2023 07:00

We have a tonies box and DS loves it he’s nearly 4.
his friend is ten and still uses his - you can get national geographic stories, Enid Blyton stories, there’s a range for older kids and they’re expanding it all the time.

I looked at the Yoto but to me I preferred something that had one primary function and did it well rather than a clock, podcasts etc but it’s down to personal preference.

kikisparks · 25/09/2023 07:03

Following. We’ve been looking at the tonie because my nearly 2yo daughter absolutely loves Bing and there’s a Bing figure but no Bing card for Yoto, but I don’t know if that’s a good enough reason as she’ll presumably grow out of Bing at some point! She also loves the Cars movie and it looks like both yoto and tonie have content for that but the tonie has the songs which is her favourite, the yoto just seems to have a story for older kids.

Q2C4 · 25/09/2023 07:03

My DC1 has had a Toniebox since she was nearly 2 and she adores it. My DC2 is 18m & is getting one for Christmas to stop her stealing her sister's one!
They love the Tonie figures which can be played with as well as listened to.
The figures hold their value pretty well and can be sold online for pretty much what you paid for them when you've finished with them.

kikisparks · 25/09/2023 07:03

Duplicate post.

You can make your own card on the yoto if that helps at all

Whinge · 25/09/2023 07:12

I agree with those who have suggested a Yoto player, especially in terms of longevity.

They love the Tonie figures which can be played with as well as listened to.

It's interesting how different people approach these decisions. For me that was one of the main cons when comparing the 2 devices. The figures are pretty expensive and I really didn't like the idea of a child losing / damaging them if they became regular play things.

DryIce · 25/09/2023 07:15

Mine both have tonie boxes, they still get listened to and the eldest is 6! They don't play with the figurines as toys, but one did get broken once.

I love the tonie box, it's very sweet. I get that yotos are supposed to be better for the long term but I've definitely had a good few years worth and now we get the national geo ones I think can go a bit longer

Whinge · 25/09/2023 09:17

Just as a heads up most Disney Tonies don't use the original audio / songs. If your little ones loves the version in the films she might not be a fan of the different voices.

Thank you that is helpful to know and not something I considered!
