Do you count your babies months by weeks or by the date she was born

So according to HV my baby is over 5 months old (20 weeks +6 days) but I thought my baby was 4 months and wouldn’t be 5 months until 1st of next month (the date she was born) I thought we had to count the months according to the date she was born if I go by weeks my baby will be 1 years old before her first birthday 😂

How? Surely she'll be 52 weeks old on the same day she turns one?!

Generally though, you go on weeks early on. Then months when they get a bit bigger. I'm not sure there's an official 'right way'. I wouldn't say she's five months if she isn't, but I think saying 21 weeks is fine (in a healthcare/development context, not if someone asks you in the park, then just round up/down to nearest month!).

20 weeks is a shorter period of time than 5 months as there are 13 four week periods in a year.

Your baby is 20 weeks and will very soon be 5 months.

I tended to do weeks for the first 3-4 months, or 12-16 ish weeks.

then I went by months on day of month they were born, unless I was asked how many weeks.

We seemed to do weeks until she was six months (or rather 26 weeks Wink), then switched to months as it made more sense then.

Weeks makes a big difference early on, then much less so.

Torganer · 24/09/2023 17:59

We did weeks until a month old, then months until they were a year old, then they were one, 18m, and now they’re 2y. Bonkers when you think about it. Will probably do 2 1/2, then ‘nearly 3’!!

Sprogonthetyne · 24/09/2023 18:02

At the beginning weeks make sense, otherwise a baby born 1st February will be one month old younger then a baby born 1st march. After a month or so I doubt those few days make much difference.

TropicalTrama · 24/09/2023 18:09

You’re correct about your baby not being 5 months yet. Assume your HV is a nutter or didn’t bother to read the notes properly - either are likely IME they’re rarely helpful! 52 weeks is the same as a year though so not sure what you mean by that?

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 24/09/2023 18:10

I'd count the same way as you. Your baby it's 20 weeks old, almost 5 months. She will be 5 months old on the 1st of the month.

I don't think people are reading your question correctly. Your HV is talking rubbish, surely. If they were born on 5th Sept they are one month old on 5th Oct, not either 4 or 5 weeks later. To a pp, there aren't exactly 52 weeks in a year (not least because the number of days in a year changes). I had this same argument with a doctor when I pointed out a year's supply of a medicine isn't a full calendar year if they count a month as 4 weeks.

And even if there were 52 weeks exactly, because an average month is 4 and a bit weeks they'd end up 13 months old by the age of one if you classed a month as 4 weeks.

Just for fun I just worked out how old my son would be if we counted every 4 weeks as 1 month.

He is 19 years old. (In real life, the usual way of counting)

If I count 4 weeks as 1 month then he's
988 weeks
247 months
20.5 years.
