Hello. My first winter with a Dc (other than a newborn)! Really interested to hear peoples must haves.

I’m looking for fleece lined leggings / warm knitted leggings too for my dc . If anyone has any suggestions that would be amazing.

She turns one in Nov and isn’t yet walking but she may do.

Next did some great fleece lined leggings last year.

Or you could look at somewhere like Mountain Warehouse.

A rain onesie will be essential. Get a good brand that doesn't leak. We've had a JoJo one that was really good. Polarn o pyret also excellent and come in adjustable sizes so you can usually get two winters out of them.

Other than that it's just vests and then a long sleeve t-shirt type and then jacket. Go for layers because it tends to be warm inside so you don't want to overdress them in big jumpers etc.

Make sure you have a cosy toes for the buggy, this is much easier than a snow suit.

I had some nice merino ones from Lindex last winter and have brought them again for this year when they had some money off (they are a bit pricey but seemed nice quality).

Are the waterproof onesies useful for a non walking baby? I was debating whether to buy one of these for my 14 month old who is bum shuffling but not showing much interest in walking.

Thank you.

I’ve seen the next fleece lined leggings so I may order some pairs :)

I am finding the various coat / snowsuit / puddlesuit options overwhelming to be honest. I have seen some possible options in jojo mama though so thank you.

Agree about the waterproof onesies. The supermarket ones are rubbish and they just end up soaked through.

Gloves with a hook on the coat or the string from one glove to another or they just fall off and get lost.

The Jojo knitted leggings are great with some lovely patterns. If you’re flexible on whether she wears leggings, then we bought these fleece joggers last year from Tu (Sainsbury's) and they were brilliant, warm, easy to wear, go with everything. https://tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/product/tuc142793288?clickSR=slp:term:fleece%20joggers:1:314:1

It'll depend on what you like to do, but if you use the park then, yes, the waterproof onesie will be useful.

Through Autumn/Winter (and even Spring) everything will be wet whether it's raining or not! The swings, sand, roundabout, slide, floor etc. a puddlesuit means they can still use everything and no concern with them getting wet.

Make sure the mention wool leggings can go in the washer/dryer as well. Fine on a tiny non-moving baby, on a 14 month old you'll want easy wash/easy dry bottoms!

Beachwaves127 · 22/09/2023 22:26

Thanks everyone @NuffSaidSam yes good point about the dryer!
I will probably invest in some jojo mama leggings. I’ve also seen some blade rose ones but the jojo ones look thicker!

I got DD several pairs of fleece-lined leggings from Next which are cosy and good quality.

If your DD is turning 1 in November she may well be starting to walk over the winter so you probably do need a warm, waterproof all-in-one for her. I recommend M&S, I had a second hand one from there which was a good generous fit and DD was able to move freely in it. Not too thick or thin. OTOH, I'd previously had another from John Lewis (also second-hand) but it wasn't such a good fit, was harder for her to move in, hence getting the M&S one.

Other than that, I agree with the PP about layers. Vest, t shirt, jumper/sweater (I prefer not too thick and also avoid hoods because it then gets awkward when you have a coat or onesie over the top). Snuggly footmuff for the pushchair. Mittens - decathlon ones are good as they're waterproof and have side zips for ease of getting on/off (NB the sizing comes up big IIRC). To keep neck warm - snood thing rather than a scarf, I've got snuggly ones from various places for my kids, H&M, JoJo, etc. And a hat with ear flaps!

My bum shuffler started walking at about 13-14 months... they all develop at their own rate but you may well find that yours starts walking over the winter!

Thanks everyone very helpful.

H&M usually also have fleece lined leggings. Morrisons also often have some ribbed knit ones, and stretchy cord ones, both cosy over winter. JoJo do the cords as well.

Definitely a proper waterproof puddlesuit like the brands already mentioned or one of the outdoor companies. The supermarket ones are often 'splashproof' rather than waterproof (except for Lidl, which does actual waterproofs). Mittens are warmer than gloves and easier to get on. Definitely put them on a string or clips.

ReeseWitherfork · 23/09/2023 12:39

Some of the H&M ones have an adjustable waist too.

modgepodge · 23/09/2023 12:46

Yes the jojo knitted leggings are great - go for the extra thick ones - they are often on offer if you buy 2 pairs.

Id assume she’ll be walking by the end of winter so buy stuff based on that. Snowsuits wirh built in feet are great for non walkers but no use whatsoever once they can walk. You can get soft shoe type things (ours were also jojo) which are basically like ski gloves but for feet 😂 to go with a footless puddle suit before she can walk.

Mummy08m · 23/09/2023 12:50

Joggers sets (jumper and trousers) - Next Boys do lovely colourblock ones, my dd has them in like 6 different colours.

Thick warm socks with grip soles - not loose bed sock types though - when learning to walk around the house.

Warm pyjamas - we used loose quilted jogger sets from Next again. Dd hates blankets (and all toddlers tend to kick them off, don't they?) so she has to be dressed like an Eskimo for bed.

Beachwaves127 · 23/09/2023 18:21

Thank you again.

So today I’ve ordered a pack of 5 thick colourful long sleeved bodysuit underlays from John Lewis today, as well as 2 x knitted leggings from blade and Ross.

Also I had a browse in jojo today and saw their knitted leggings, thick cashmere cardigans and fleece lined full waterproof suit - I will order in a few weeks when I am more sure on dds size 😁

then hoping I can keep it simple over winter by each day chucking dd into knitted leggings, a vest & long sleeved bodysuit, thick cardigan, followed by her full waterproof snowsuit if we go out on cold days. I am ashamed to say that I get stressed if I Have too much choice 🙈

We also have a second hand puffer coat and a fleece rain mac, for the non bitter days.

If anyone thinks of soemthing obvious that won’t work do let me know 😁

thick socks, hats, mits to follow.

I loved DD's Blade and Rose leggings when she was still in nappies. They are quite bright and patterned so I just put them with a plain long sleeved body suit and cardigan/jumper. I also love dungarees over a body suit but it was sometimes tricky getting them to fit in the body length and legs at the same time. I also still used long sleeved and legged rompers (no feet) over a vest with a cardi. I think Jojo do the best all in one suits, we had their fleece lined ones but cheaper Trespass waterproof only ones for cooler days.

That’s good to hear thank you. We were looking at the jojo fleece lined so glad they worked for you.

The one thing I don't recommend is those leggings with suspenders. There's a popular scandi brand but also cheapo ones out there - I bought some from the nice brand but they are far too much faff for nappy changes. Ordinary leggings are fine because you can pull them off, and dungarees are fine if they have poppers at the crotch.
