Toddler’s weight

Hi everyone, just here for some advice really. My 2 year old daughter is currently under the health visitors and gp because of her behaviour traits linked to autism. She has many but I won’t go into all of them, but one of the main concerns of mine is her eating. It’s beyond picky eating, it’s like an eating disorder. She won’t eat whole food categories, only her “safe foods”, and some days she hardly eats at all. I’ve been to the GP twice about her eating and to the health visitors once (among the other 3 or 4 times I’ve seen them about her other behaviours) The health visitors have basically said I’m doing all the right things and they’ll come back out in December to have her development check and talk about our concerns etc. well the doctors have been no help, they’ve said if it did turn out she has autism her eating is probably linked and that they won’t refer her to a peadriatician for her eating unless they can see she’s dropping weight on the centile chart in her red book. Which I understand to an extent, but surely you wouldn’t leave a child to be struggling with their weight before anything is done? She currently weighs 10.4kg and is 2ft 32inches. (2 years old), so I’m worried that she is already underweight and no professionals seems to be bothered. Would just like some advice really or experiences with this.

I’m sorry to hear things are so difficult. There is a SEN board which may have people who are able to advice suited to children with AFRID.

What are her centiles and are they dropping?

FallingAutumnLeaf · 18/09/2023 19:50

If you double check her height and weight, and put them in here
https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-weight/bmi-calculator/

It should tell you if there is a problem. I put her in as 2f 3, 2.6 years, 10.4 kg and got a bizarre result, so think something might be wrong in the numbers.

Remember, changes are as important as the actual numbers. So, if the answer is 9th centile, but her measurements always put her around there, it's not a problem. If she started on 90th centile, and started dropping to 50th after her first birthday, it's much more concerning.

Hi everyone thank you for your replies,
I will definitely have a look at the SEN board. I never know where to place myself!

last time the doctors weighed her was about 2 months ago and she was on the 9th centile. They pointed out the fact she was also born small so could play a part. They ended up treating her for constipation at that appointment (due to her lack of variety of foods that she’ll eat). Since then she hasn’t been weighed professionally only at home, but from what I’ve tried to measure in her red book she’s closer to the 25th centile? I’m not too sure how the centiles work really. The doctors have told me to get her weighed regularly and have it down in her red book so I’m hoping to get in touch with the health visitors again tomorrow and ask if I can see them in clinic to do so.

I did look on the BMI for children on the nhs and it says she’s underweight so it’s left me even more clueless on what to do as I’ve only just seen the doctors/ health visitor

Incase I’m confusing anyone as well I had seen the doctors 2 months ago in which they treated her for constipation in relation to her diet and then I saw them a week or so ago again about her eating because nothing was done last time really only the fact it’s been documented. So this time when the doctors told me they wouldn’t do anything until they could see her weight dropping and prescribed my daughter vitamins to replace the vitamins she may be missing in food. The health visitors said I’m doing all the right things and they’d be back out anyway, and to carry on what I’m doing. So I feel like I’m just going from pillow to post.
