1 year old lip tie!

So my 1 year old has got 2 top teeth and i noticed a gap was forming, quite a big one to be fair. And this morning i lifted his top lip and he has quite a bad lip tie!! I can’t believe i have never noticed, i paid for his tongue tie cutting at 3 weeks old but i think that has come back a little but not as bad as it was originally.
But now i’m so worried about the lip tie!! will it affect his speech? Has anyone’s little ones ever had a bad one and it not affected speech or anything like that? Also does anyone know if he will always have a gap in his teeth (unless having braces) I’m really upset after finding it :(

Everyone has a frenulum it doesn't mean it's a tie at all. An untrained eye wouldn't be able to tell
We don't actually do anything for lip ties in the UK anyway
My two year has a TT which wasn't cut she has great speech
My first daughter had a TT snip as a baby and her speech was quite delayed in comparison so it doesn't mean any issue will happen

Lip/tongue ties are extremely common in babies and children and most actually improve or even completely resolve themselves without interventIon. The good news is, unless she’s having speech or feeding issues, it’s harmless. Braces are not the end of the world and neither is a gap in her smile :) but if the gap concerns you then…braces :) I wouldn’t worry!

The tie does affect him quite alot and has already caused damage to his top teeth (he’s 16m now) the tie is so tight we can’t brush his teeth without it bleeding as he has no ‘gum’ as such. He’s seeing a specialist this week to discuss removal :)

Mine kept his until 4yo when, as the dentist predicted, he had a fall and split it. She also told us he will need braces for the gap, it's not the end of the world compared to everything else and all the surgeries he's waiting for! His speech is fine I think, although his 'rs' still sound like 'ws' which is unfortunate given his name has 2.

My 3 year old is the exact same. She also is a chronic thumb sucker so she has a big gap.
She had a grade 4 lip tie, her speech is perfect, she didn't have any feeding issues. I don't bother asking for a referral to get it removed as most lip ties self resolve.

Did you affect your little ones top teeth and brushing too??
His speech is coming along fine, but obviously it’s not good that we can’t get a toothbrush in there to brush his top set! The discolouration is crazy in such a short space of time :(

Yes? We have to be very gentle brushing too teeth.
We brush her top teeth a little different. Normally I'd go 'together' and she will do a big grin and I can brush the front of her teeth IYSWIM but that can make it bleed, so instead I ask her to open her mouth super wide and instead of brushing tight to left right to left I brush forward and back for each tooth at the front. I hope that makes sense.

But last week I bought these (link below) which make it so much easier and less time consuming! I now ask her to open her mouth and can get to the front teeth underneath and give them a good brush instead of the backwards and forwards thing.

Try these. Because of the angle on them you can ask your DC to open their mouth and get at the lip tie teeth from underneath pretty easily.

Sorry I didn't mean to put a '?' In my reply. No idea how that ended up in there, it makes my reply look a bit arsey, I didn't mean to be!

Hi @AmberM2022 sorry to message on an old thread but I notice you mention you are seeing a specialist to look at the lip tie. Can you advise how you went about this as I didn’t think they will treat lip ties on the nhs?

AmberM2022 · 03/05/2024 14:21

@Takemeawayy no they don’t on NHS as far as i know or only if it’s preventing eating or speech. We have a private clinic near us, the gap in his teeth is actually getting ever so slightly better, even though the lip tie is still there.
