Newborn and 18 month old, will I definitely need a double buggy?

And if so any advice on which one ? There's so many and no idea what kind I'll need.
I can't afford anything that's over 1k, looking for a fairly cheaper one if possible

I have the same age gap and I would say you definitely need one
I had the Silver Cross Wave. Bulky but loads of room in the bassinet and seats. I lived it and it can get down aisles in shops easily

I had the same age gap. Yes, the double buggy was very much needed. Had a mountain buggy Duet. I think I did buy the carrycot but only because baby was due peak summer and didn't want to carry him all the time in the heat. At a cooler part of the year, I'd probably not bother. Mountain buggy is under 1K, but I found it very heavy. It's good for walking on uneven paths though. However, I did get rid of it after a year or so and moved to a cheaper cossatto double as it was slightly lighter, and then eventually moved to a bugaboo fox with buggy board. If my doorframe had been slightly wider, I'd have got the bugaboo donkey without hesitation (as long term it can convert into a single buggy). Overall - double buggy was essential!!

I got an out n about on advice from MN and it's horrendous, it's huge and it doesn't fold small so it's a nightmare, really heavy too. And the wheels kept going flat! Now I've got a much cheaper one and i wish I bought that in the first place, newborn would've been fine in there with a newborn insert

I highly recommend the mountain buggy duet. The basket is huge and perfect for two kids and all their junk. I originally bought an out and about nipper secondhand and almost instantly regretted it as it had basically no basket. And if you hung anything heavy on the handle while it was empty it tipped over. I covetously looked at a mountain buggy duet in the park, sold the out and about and quickly bought a secondhand mountain buggy. I never had the carrycot because in the early months I let my daughter stay in the buggy and my baby was in a carrier. So I only used the double buggy once they both needed to be in a pushchair. But the mountain buggy is really light, super easy to handle and nowhere near as wide as it looks and you think it will feel.

DaisyChain16 · 14/09/2023 19:03

Yes definitely you'll need one. I got a second hand bugaboo donkey and it's the best thing ever.

Cotswoldmama · 14/09/2023 19:23

I had a 3 year she gap and got one, we didn't use it for long but I do t drive so we walked everywhere so I needed the option on him getting in a pushchair if needed. I had a Phil a d Ted's one, which was excellent as it was narrow so not awkward to manoeuvre.

RosesAreReady · 14/09/2023 19:26

Yes I would, my 18 m old still napped! Wouldn’t use a sling as wouldn’t want a baby stuck on me all day but each to their own I would find that uncomfortable. I don’t drive so wouldn’t manage with an 18m old walking everywhere would take ages!

lorisparkle · 14/09/2023 19:51

I had an 21 month gap and tried the pram / buggy board and pushchair / sling idea. It was an absolute nightmare. I wish I had bought a proper double. We ended up with a second hand Phil and Ted which was fine (and actually was great when they were older) but in hindsight I should have done proper research and invested in a good double.

Rachaelrachael · 14/09/2023 19:56

Yeah definitely, life would be very difficult without a double. I have a 19 month age gap and we used the icandy peach. Made shopping so much easier having the toddler safely strapped in especially when walking through car park, plus space for bags underneath

MaMisled · 14/09/2023 19:59

My DC were 16mths apart and my McClaren double buggy did a great job as I also walked everywhere. It would be easy to sell when you're done with it.

VisitationRights · 14/09/2023 20:03

22 month gap and I didn’t get a double? I used a buggy board instead and my toddler loved it.

SouthLondonMum22 · 14/09/2023 20:05

I'd think so. Mine will be about the same age, have a car but walk/use public transport more so we'll definitely be getting one.

I think we'll probably end up with the Mountain Buggy Duet or the Out N About Nipper.

Muststopeating · 14/09/2023 20:08

I never bothered and my first 2 were 15 months apart. I can barely steer a single buggy without knocking things over.

We live rurally and drive everywhere so possibly different.

Buggy and an ergobaby worked for us. Though my eldest was quite a compliant toddler and loved walking. (If we were talking about my current terrorist toddler we might be having a different conversation).

supercatlady · 14/09/2023 20:12

My grandchildren are similar ages. DD got one suitable from newborn which can convert to single if you don’t need both. I think it was around £600 - brand Oyster

justme2022 · 14/09/2023 20:13

There's 13 months between mine. We got the out n about nipper. I had the carrycot but to start with but only because I borrowed it off of someone. Don't think I'd bother with it if I had to buy it separately. It's a great buggy. My 2 year old doesn't go in it much anymore as she would rather walk (crawl, cartwheel or do whatever else she feels like doing to slow me down) but I still take it out with us and use the extra seat to keep bags in.

CrabbyCat · 14/09/2023 20:16

I had 21 months between DC1 and 2. I started out with a sling plus single / board. However, by 6 months DC2 just got too heavy for a sling when also pushing a buggy (either was ok, doing both killed my back). DC1 was still napping, and also was still a liability from a safety perspective.

I got a 2nd hand double and it was literally life changing. DC1 was completely happy next to DC2, and I didn't need eyes on the back of my head any more!

I can’t recommend the uppababy vista enough, so many combos and is the same size as a single so I got on buses easy too and I don’t drive either so is great over any terrain. Also the basket is the biggest I’ve seen on a pushchair and is still going now my youngest is 4, once eldest is walking I attached a buggyboard, I got the red kite one, and uppababy a customer service is also on point and will replace a chassis if anything goes wrong, I brought a second hand one, didn’t have the receipt and after two years of me having it the bar snapped and they send me a brand new newer model chassis for free, Iv also paid for the service and got new fabrics, wheels and basket so have got a brand new pram for a £65 service! Also takes a maxi cosi car seat too. It’s a work horse and I’m sad to see it be redundant now mine have outgrown it

Mama2six · 14/09/2023 20:28

Forgot to say, it’s amazing as a single too!

StorminanDcup · 14/09/2023 20:32

100% yes.

I literally don’t know how people would cope without a double with two children under 3.

we had the mountain buggy, absolutely used to death.

Get secondhand if you’d rather not fork out, I always see decent prams on marketplace.

Carbis · 14/09/2023 20:40

19 month gap here. We had an uppababy vista for our first but I didn’t like it as a double so sold it. The baby stayed in the sling for ages but we got a second hand out and about from Facebook market place when the baby was about 6 months. We are still using it and he’s nearly 2 so it was definitely money well spent.

6monthspost · 14/09/2023 21:20

Have a look on Facebook Marketplace, there are tonnes of second hand buggies at very reasonable prices
