Cheese

Hi ladies, looking for some advice on what healthy cheeses you could give to a 1.5 year old? I try to stay away from processed foods, never gave her juice and even yogurt I try to get the ones that have just fruit and no artificial flavours, etc.
What types of cheeses available in supermarkets would you recommend? I checked the "kids" section in Tescos and they all seem like "fake" cheese almost...

Kids' cheese? Why not just regular cheese?

Missingmyusername · 11/09/2023 20:34

Grass fed cheese? Kids cheese is likely to be full of crap?

ODFOx · 11/09/2023 20:37

I always bought farm mature cheddar so that's what my children (when small) ate. I understand from other Mums that you should start off with mild cheddar.

None of my DC/SDC had processed cheese at home until they were 8 or so and asked for cheese strings or mini babybel.

Now between the group of us we can take down every stand at a cheese fair. 🙂

Normal cheese. Anything which doesn’t have crappy sounding additives. Cheddar, cream cheese, mozzarella and panner are well loved in our house. You may want to be careful not to give too much halloumi as it can be salty. My kids aren’t a fan of brie and blue cheeses.

wishIwasonholiday10 · 11/09/2023 20:45

Just let them try the cheeses you are eating but not too much of the saltier ones like feta. Mine loves mozzarella especially. I also do cheddar for snacks, normally just the tasty one we buy.

Pasteurised Emmenthal is one of the less salty ones, good for cooking with as well as a nice flavour.

Snowpaw · 11/09/2023 20:59

Emmenthal is great for young children because its quite a lot lower in salt than other cheeses.

It never even occured to me that DD needed a special type of cheese...

Cathedral city
Parmesan
Philadelphia

All staples in our house.

I don't buy into kids versions of normal foods. Just give them the normal food

Sprogonthetyne · 11/09/2023 21:20

Do you mean you want to avoid things like cheese string, but still want it marketed for kids?

Mine just have normal cheese, usually own brand cheddar. I cut it into cubes and put it in a small tub if they're taking it as a snack or part of packt lunch.

Cheddar? Plain Greek yog is my daughters fave. And yeah deff no juice

motleymop · 11/09/2023 21:45

Cheddar, edam, gouda, jarlsberg, emmental, babybel are ones that immediately spring to mind.

Pitstop1986 · 11/09/2023 21:48

My 20 month old will eat most cheeses (apart from the Wensleydale and cranberry or the one with added chives- she doesn't seem to like them!), but mainly eats cheddar as that's what we have in mainly. We also give her babybels when out and about. I find them convenient as they're individually wrapped and you can just grab one out of the fridge before we leave the house.
