Book recommendations for 7 year old boy?

chickpea1982 · 10/09/2023 13:21

I'm looking for some book recommendations for DC1, who is 7 years' old. He's just started to read independently, but so far the only books he will read are the Dog Man series, which he has flown through. He can be quite resistant to trying new things, so I'm hoping to find similar comic-style books that will interest him.

I'd also be interested in recommendations for books we could read to him. Not Harry Potter or Roald Dahl - we've tried, and he's not interested. I think perhaps the stories are a bit slow to hold his interest. Maybe something a bit simpler might work better? Adventure stories perhaps?

Thanks in advance!

The Mr Gum books are great and very funny. My 7 year old also likes the Bear Grylls kids books but depends if yours is into that sort of thing!

The Ninja Kid series by Ahn Do are really good, easy enough for early readers and still fun enough to read aloud

Sprogonthetyne · 10/09/2023 14:15

Dinosaur cove are short and easy chapter books for boys.

DS also enjoys the How to train your dragon series but they are very long, so probably more of a one to read to him. Or someone has put the audio books on YouTube if he'd enjoy listening (there's probably copyright issue, they'll be other ways to access if that bothers you)

Have you tried Bunny Vs Monkey?

DatumTarum · 10/09/2023 14:18

Can you not just to take him to the library and let him choose?

Samanabanana · 10/09/2023 14:22

DS7 loves David Williams books, the Investigators' series, the 13 Storey Treehouse series, the Magic Faraway Tree trilogy and has just read Wildsmith 'into the dark forest' which he loved so much he's read it twice and is desperate for book 2!

sleepismyhobby · 10/09/2023 14:23

My ds nearly 7 loves the Pamela butchart books . Horrid Henry which I dislike but he enjoys and he's just read the enormous crocodile

cariadlet · 10/09/2023 14:25

Tom Gates is also popular with boys this age.

bookgirl1982 · 10/09/2023 14:31

Yes my seven year old devours Tom Gates books (author is Liz Pichon).

Lindtnotlint · 10/09/2023 14:33

If he loves Dogman, do Bunny vs Monkey. Is a slam dunk.

NameChange30 · 10/09/2023 14:35

Did you know that the Dog Man author has published other series too? Cat Kid and Captain Underpants are the two that spring to mind.

My son is 6.5 and he has enjoyed:
Billy and the Mini Monsters (book 1 is Monsters in the Dark)
The Secret Explorers and the Lost Whales (that's book 1, there's a whole series)
Toto the Ninja Cat
Wigglesbottom Primary (I found these boring but he liked them)

He tends to enjoy short chapter books with lots of illustrations (preferably colour illustrations) and all those fit the bill. I should point out that I read them aloud although he often reads along with me.

Himawarigirl · 10/09/2023 14:37

For comic book style Bunny vs Monkey, Star Cat, Evil Emperor Penguin and Captain Underpants (not as bad as it sounds) are all good.

cherryassam · 10/09/2023 14:37

I can second the Mr Gum books - one of my nephews loved those at that age.

Also:

The Boy who Grew Dragons series by Andy Shepherd

The Worst Class in the World Series by Joanna Nadin

The Beast Quest books by Adam Blade (there are literally hundreds - started buying them from my eldest nephew in about 2015 and now still buying them for one of my younger nephews)

FlamboMango · 10/09/2023 14:38

Looshkin (comic book) and Grimwood
go Down well here, along with the 13 storey treehouse novels
Beast Quest are very formulaic but the repetition can be good for early readers.
Also those short biographies of footballers

Bowlfullofmush · 10/09/2023 14:38

My ds has been enjoying the Pizazz series by Sophy Henn. They are really good fun with lots of comic strip style illustrations.

Madcats · 10/09/2023 14:41

What is your stance on audiobooks? DD devoured them at that age (Mr Gum and Cressida Cowel's How to Train your Dragon series were great for a long journey). Then came Antony Horowitz...

cherryassam · 10/09/2023 14:41

@FlamboMango yes I find the Beast Quest books fairly tedious to read as an adult. I only just found out that Adam Blade is not an actual person but instead a pseudonym for a group of ghost writers, which actually makes a lot of sense.

Spotnessmonster · 10/09/2023 14:41

All those mentioned above and The Bad Guys series and Agent S.U.IT were a hit. We found taking him into Waterstones and checking out the graphic novel section and letting him pick some comic series worked.

sleepismyhobby · 10/09/2023 14:42

Oh yeah Tom gates are fab books and get a lot of giggles . I did buy my ds son David walliams but think
More suited to 8-9 as he found them to difficult to read

Riverlee · 10/09/2023 14:43

Rob Child does some football themed books. My dc loved these.

Can you not just to take him to the library and let him choose?

He is very resistant to the library. He tends to just mess around, or sit on the floor and refuse to actually look at any books. Our local library is a bit rubbish though.

You've probably done this already - but you could go to the library without him and borrow a selection for him. If he's not interested it doesn't matter hugely as you can just return them.

chickpea1982 · 10/09/2023 15:54

Thanks everyone! That's given me loads of ideas. Now I just need to persuade him to actually read them...!

MouseKeys · 10/09/2023 16:23

My kid loves Toto the Ninja Cat, Secret Seven, Captain Underpants, The Faraway Tree/Wishing Chair, Flamingo Hotel, Horrid Henry, Spy Cats and Roald Dahl. I hope that helps!

Simplelobsterhat · 10/09/2023 17:15

If he prefers shorter / faster moving and likes comic book style, then Bunny Vs Monkey, Tom Gates, Diary of Wimpy kid, treehouse books ,Daisy and the trouble with... Pamela Buchart, Grimwood, worst class in the world.
I've quite enjoyed reading Greg James Kid Normal books and David Baddiel to him - a bit longer but funny adventures.

Maybe not ready for how to train your dragon yet as that's probably closer to the early Harry Potter's in complexity / pace.

My 8 yo adores Beast quest books. I find them very boring to read aloud but they have captured his imagination!
