How often do you check your DC at night?

My DC is 14 months old. Once asleep I have a baby monitor on but the screen is grainy. I go in and check once before I go to bed but just a general quick hand on chest for a few seconds or just standing by cot. Then baby monitor is on low beside me for the night.

i just saw another thread where someone noticed their DC were breathing rapidly while asleep and said DC had been fine before bed. I wouldn’t know if my DC was doing this if it was after I checked them so I’m wondering should I be going in and checking more or doing as more detailed check for a few minutes?

I had a monitor but never went in to check on them.

Holdmysunhat · 09/09/2023 23:25

Very rarely! Though I have been checking on my two year old in this heat as their room gets especially warm.

I pretty much put them to sleep and forget about them till the morning. I’m very careful with safe sleep guidelines with my toddler though and follow all the Lullaby Trust guidelines to the letter.

I had the sound monitor (no screen but plenty of taxi voices) until she was in her own bed and able to get out if she really needed us, so probably 2 1/2yrs.

But I always checked in when I went to bed every night, even when they were 16yrs and just finished school. Hard habit to break 😂

Never had a monitor but I check all mine before bed.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 09/09/2023 23:28

I checked before bed when they were that little then I went to bed and only went back in if they woke up crying.

My youngest is 21 months and now I only check if one of the DCs make a noise more than once (or, one worrying noise like a bump and I'm there). We actually have a baby monitor somewhere that we bought when DD was a few weeks old and made it clear that she just couldn't sleep in the same room as anyone else at all, but I haven't used it since DD turned 1 and I don't even know where it is now.

Abouttimemum · 09/09/2023 23:30

We check on 4yo DS before we go to bed but that’s it, always been the same. I wouldn’t dare go into his room after about 3am anyway as I run the risk of waking him up for the day 🤣

Cellotapedispenser · 09/09/2023 23:31

When DC1 was tiny, he'd been in the scubu so I bought a breathing pad monitor for him as I was terrified he'd stop breathing. Between that and the camera monitor I was reassured enough to go to sleep and only check if the alarm went off or he woke and cried. Finally got some 3 hour blocks of sleep at that point but was exhausted.

Spinningcats · 09/09/2023 23:31

I had a breathing monitor. When she was very young I’d wake for a wee and feel I needed to check her but that was anxiety I think more than anything else.

as far as o can see the only reason a child would be rapidly breathing is because they’re ill with a temperature. And if this is the case they’d wake up and cry surely?

StaySpicy · 09/09/2023 23:35

Whenever I go to the loo! So a check before I get into bed for the last time and then if I wake up in the night I'll check again. Unless it's half 5 in the morning, as he wakes up shortly after that. We only just stopped using a monitor with our 4yo and I wouldn't sleep until I'd seen him breathe/move.

Oatsamazing · 09/09/2023 23:39

My DD was still waking up 5-6 times a night at that age so I never checked her. She's almost 3 and still often wakes 1-2 times, I rarely check her as the slightest noise will wake her.

memine · 09/09/2023 23:43

DC1 was in the same room as us until she was 4.5 (due to being ina small flat), so I could hear her breathing through the night. After we moved and she settled in her own room I just left her to it once she was asleep, I never think to check on her before bed as I'd just worry the noise would wake her.

DC2 is 16m and still in our room. Still waking us up through the night so I've never checked on her 😄. We plan to move her into DC1's room only once she's not waking (so she doesn't disturb her sister). Once that happens we'll probably leave them until morning.

ReeseWitherfork · 09/09/2023 23:46

DT 17 months still wake 2.5 million times a night so that’s how many times I check. There’s not a hope in hells chance I’ll be voluntarily going in once they finally sleep through the night.

FTMbg · 09/09/2023 23:48

I rang 111 for similar once, 1yo had been poorly without breathing problems, then was obviously breathing fast straight after I'd fed her to sleep before I'd even left the room so I counted breaths/minute, googled and phoned 111. It must have been the horizontal position that made the breathing more difficult. 111 insisted I wake her and bring her in despite her breathing better again once not lying flat, can't remember they probably gave antibiotics and I slept in her room that night for my own peace of mind then but she was ok. I don't think I'd over think this, we still usually just leave her on a monitor like yours now, I think when they're poorly you naturally check more or stay with them if needed.

Laneymoo · 09/09/2023 23:51

Literally never, she needs peace to sleep and me going in and out would disturb her and wake her. I have a monitor with video and sound but I darken the screen when going to bed and have the sound on the lowest setting. I hear her before the monitor anyway as there's a slight delay. I wouldn't worry!

1daughterand3sons · 09/09/2023 23:59

I have the youngest 10m sleep in my room so I can hear him. I also have my 6 year old in my room he sleep walks so need him in with me so I know if he's got out of his bed and can act quickly if he does.
My 22 month old has a monitor in his room. My husband checks on him 2-3 times a night. I don't check on him I can hear his breathing on the monitor and when I have checked on him I've woken him up.

ell87 · 10/09/2023 00:04

I kept them in with me for 2 years so was constantly checking them.
My nephew died of SIDS and my daughter who's now 10 has had nocturnal grand mal seizures for 3 years so I have to sleep next to her with limbs touching so I can wake up if she's having one.

Beachwaves127 · 11/09/2023 00:01

I check in persons once before bed. But I keep baby monitor on all night and like to check on her on screen, or to check has she moved positions / sometimes I can hear her snoring. Dc 9 months. I like the baby monitor even though dc is only next door it makes me feel a bit calmer

Brightandshining · 11/09/2023 00:29

After the age of 1 I did not check on any of mine during the night. Never used a baby monitor. In with me anyway for first 6mos then in own rooms and would only go in after bedtime if they cried in the night. Or if they were under the weather. My daughter has asthma so I would regularly check on her in the night if her breathing had been at all worrying during the day.

Bluelightbaby · 11/09/2023 00:59

When mine were young I checked on them both before I went to bed and then I slept all night - no monitor (but it was 18yrs ago) didn’t even own a monitor

comfyshoes2022 · 11/09/2023 01:35

Never. Although I have a monitor on so I can hear if they’re calling out for me.
