Flying with 5mo

Off to Tenerife soon with our 5 month old baby... any tips to help the flight and / or holiday? I've taken note of lots already but always keen to hear more!

One question I did have is making up formula, is it ok to use tap water then boil, or should we use a certain bottled one as I know some bottled water isn't suitable?!

Some of the good tips we've got so far (in case it helps others!):

  • order formula etc from Boots and collect in departures
  • check out local hire companies for things like Next 2 Me etc
  • bottle or dummy for take off and landing

Pregnant women and young kids can't use tap water in Tenerife for drinking or cooking. Bezoya is the best brand for babies

Pack double the nappies you think your will need for the flight.
Take a change of clothes on board for YOU as well in case there is an accident and you get stuff on you.

There might be a lot of queue at the car rental if you are using one, so one of you should queue with baby whilst other waits for luggages.

Definitely a change of clothes, maybe two. Our DD was six month old and she had an explosive accident lol. We also downloaded tv shows that were appropriate.

I also have fidget spinners that stick so if you or DP have a window seat.

You'll find that DC will sleep most of the way!

Sorry I hit send too soon.

•Calpol. Definitely calpol. You can pick that up too at the airport.

•Pram fan because of the heat. I also found this useful attaching to the cot in the hotel as the aircon was shocking where we were.

•I also took our play mat for DD for next to the pool and for the hotel room & a few of her fave toys

• plenty and I mean plenty of bottled water. Doesn't matter what brand as long as it isn't tap.

•ensure room has a kettle to sterilise the bottles.

• parasol for the pram. Make sure it's UV protected. Don't use blanket/muslin as this can make the pram 10oc hotter if not properly covered.

DD basically lived in vests the entire holiday & also napped a lot throughout the day due to the heat.

Have flown before with 3 months and up, and older kids in tow too (next up is 15 months older). I think 5 months can be the golden age of flying (sleep for much of it, not too big to have on lap etc.) but you can also be treated to a difficult flight unexpectedly. Completely agree with @justanothermanicmonday1 especially about the Calpol, babies ears are not always ready for coming down from 32,000 feet and they will make their discomfort clear. If there was ever a case for an early dose of Calpol, this is it. I would get a bottle of Calpol that is under 100ml for the flight rules, or maybe the sachets. And yes, if your baby has a dummy, then helpful for the last 30 minutes of the flight, or that is the time to have a bottle (sucking helps). Change of clothes (baby and baby holder) is helpful. Take double of what you think you will need, flight delays can be awful. Finally, try not to worry if your baby cries, that is what babies do, for every tutting person there are two nicer people that have been there before with their baby and are wishing you well. I'd choose a crying baby every time over a drunk bloke.
