Hi,

I have a 16 month old DS who HATES having his hair washed. We've tried a little cap to stop it going in his eyes but he won't wear it/or hats!

He screams when we have to do it so after any advice if anyone's been in a similar situation.

Thanks

My advice is to do it as quickly as possible!

Do it as quickly and infrequently as possible! I find shorter hair is easier as it doesn't take as long to wash.

Perseverance. He won't always scream and it's a bit like giving them meds they don't like, you just have to roll with it.

Swimming googles if he’ll wear them, be as well quick as poss and do it as infrequently as you can get away with so once a week unless visibly dirty.

Can you lay him back in a shallow bath so you can quickly splash his head, lather and splash again without it going near his face?

That's how I used to wash DS hair when he was a toddler and screamed any other way. He now loves standing under the shower head and getting his face wet.

My 17 month old DS hates having his hair washed so we only do it once a week unless necessary.
We try and get him to look up just at the moment we pour the water on his head -making a bird noise, clicking fingers, my husband doing something silly etc.

Probably a bit controversial but the only way we could wash my niece's hair was to take her out of the bath and wrap her in a towel so that her arms were under the towel. One of us would pick her up and hold her over the bath and the other would do the hair washing. Obviously got harder to do the bigger she got and she still screamed bloody murder every time but she eventually grew out of it and doesn't seem to have any residual trauma from it!

Stick something high up on tiles and ask them to look at it so they tilt their head back. And/or hold a flannel against their eyes whilst rinsing

DD used to be fine having her hair washed. Until the day she wasn't and decided she hated it. We tried all sorts of different thing but the only thing that actually worked was time and she eventually grew out of hating it. She's now 3 and will close her eyes and tip her head back to have her hair washed and is fine. DS is 8mo and is ok with having his hair washed but I'm fully expecting him to go through the stage of hating it too.
