Active sleep!!

How does anyone sleep when their baby is active sleeping?? My 8 week old is so noisy and is thrashing around like crazy! I'm a light sleeper generally and finding it so hard to sleep when he's like this. I'm trying to rest when he active sleeps and I usually wait to see if the movement/noise will stop before getting up to check him but it's so hard to even relax! It stresses me out knowing that he's asleep and I should be too (but can't!). Oh, and his arm has escaped his swaddle and so I also have the constant question of whether to tuck it back in or not and risk a full awakening haha!

Any advice? Help!

My 10 week old son sounded like a little pig/dinosaur hybrid up until this week! he was on anti reflux milk and I don’t think it suited him. I’ve switched his formula this week and he is much more peaceful thankfully. I was the same though staring into the next to me watching him sleep whilst grunting, gurning, wriggling and snorting. I had no idea they were so noisy!!

He also like to rest his hands on his face so they are usually poking out of the top of his swaddle bag. With the weather being so hot last few nights I’ve swaddled him in a muslin but his arms always come out of that, he was definitely more wriggly and his arms flailing but still fast asleep so I would leave them if your son stays sleeps with them out, might make it easier when he has to transition out of a swaddle too?

Hope he starts to quieten down a bit and you get some sleep!

Honestly? And I might get flamed for this, but I am such a light sleeper, that between a snoring husband, and fidgety, grunty baby I was literally getting zero sleep. In the end I used silicone earplugs which allowed me to not hear the grunts and squeaks, but I did alert to him crying/being sick in the night.

He was in an heirloom wooden crib that I had as a baby, lovingly refurbed by my mum and dad, so when he was unswaddled he would whack his arms against the wood and wake himself and everyone else up. So against advice and my better judgement, I moved him into his own room at 4.5 months and could then stop using earplugs. I really didn't want to move him, and cried for about 2 nights straight but it was that or be tortured through lack of sleep (and no just the usual run of the mill sleepless nights you get with a newborn!)

@Thelazygardener he's having reflux issues too so maybe that's why he's extra noisy! We're trying all sorts for the reflux so fingers crossed something settles him like yours! :)

@USaYwHatNow I don't think that sounds bad at all! You've got to do what's best for you! My husband snores too and pre-baby I always wore ear plugs. If he snored in a rhythm then I reckon its be alright but it's so erratic haha! We're taking shifts with baby at the moment so it's not an issue but I honestly think I'll need to go back to my earplugs too! That might be my way forward!!

Thanks both! :)

@LunaBear26 my son was 3 weeks early and barely over 5lb and tongue tie so it was a bit of a nightmare. He was BF for a month but tongue tie really messed it up. He was on aptamil regular but was violently sick and acid reflux so we put him on aptamil anti reflux. It served its purpose at the time but started to cause issues. 12+ messy dirty nappies a day and the most horrendous trapped wind, we added Colief, tried infacol and dentinox. He wasn’t sick but the acid kept him awake and he was bloated 24/7. I took a chance and saw some reviews so tried hipp comfort (thinking lactose may have been the issue and it’s partially broken down in that) he was like a different boy. Tiny bit of spittle and had to concentrate on pace feeding but he slept silently for the first time.

saw HV yesterday who said not to bother with comfort so I picked up a box of Hipp Organic and honestly it’s been brilliant. I don’t use any of the drops or extras and you can tell it’s much lighter in his tummy. I really hope you find one to help your little one. Finding formula is an absolute minefield!

BruinBear96 · 08/09/2023 13:34

My son was like this and the noise and resulting lack of sleep drove me crazy. It was an awful time. Absolutely nothing helped- infacol, colic drops, thick milk, gavison, omeprazole...he did stop of his own accord and started sleeping quietly at around 12 weeks.

Headphones or ear plugs, you'll still hear if they cry.

LunaBear26 · 08/09/2023 13:39

@Thelazygardener oh wow! That sounds horrible! I'm so glad you've found something to help!! We're on kendamill at the moment which seems better than the cow and Gate be had previously but might try the hipp. It's all so complicated! :)

@BruinBear96 I'm really hoping he grows out of it too!

Me and DH took it in turns to sleep in the spare room… my DS was constantly moaning and groaning and making horrible strangling noises (also had reflux). If he ever went silent I was also instantly awake because it was so infrequent.

Very difficult few months I have to be honest… he will grow out of it though.. hang in there.

Thelazygardener · 08/09/2023 13:44

@LunaBear26 I really liked the look of the kendamil and heard great things. The only thing that swayed me off was the fact it was made with full fat milk and because my son was so bloated I thought it might have been the lactose content. It was between Hipp and Kendamil and it just came down to milk type really. (And my local Tesco never seems to have Kendamil in stock!).

It’s awful isn’t it, I don’t want to wish the weeks away but I really can’t wait for his digestive system to mature and settle…

Cluelessfirstimer · 08/09/2023 15:03

God I remember this. I'm such a light sleeper and it killed the very little sleep I was able to grab!

As others have suggested - ear plugs. Lifesaver. I only had one in the ear I don't put on the pillow but honestly you will hear baby if they wake up anyway.

It gets better

LunaBear26 · 09/09/2023 03:01

@Thelazygardener I know what you mean! There are so many lovely things about the newborn stage and I know I'll miss these but also so many things that everyone says will get better once he grows up a bit, and I can't wait for that haha!

Honestly, I’ll be flamed for this, and I know it’s not in line with the guidance, but both my babies slept in the living room right at our bedroom door, not in our room. We had a monitor and could hear any issues on that and because they were close by we could hear well and get to them fast, but I could sleep vs when I couldn’t with the active sleep noise levels. They were both very grunty 😂
