My ds is turning 3 next month and only has about 6-7 words. Did anyone dc have a turning point when they turned 3? I'm getting so worried. We've had his hearing checked and been to speech therapy but hasn't helped

DS3 was like this. He's 28 now & you can't shut him up! Seriously though, he's an estate agent & definitely has the gift of the gab. What is the Speech and Language Therapist saying?

Our lb was like this exactly.

The hv wasn't too worried, and neither was I (until he turned 3!) because he had very good understanding. He was just taking it all in..

Started speaking just a few weeks later. He's 9 now, doing very well at school and a really chatterbox.

Our ds was like this. Looking back at videos when he was 3.5 he was still only making sort of descriptive sounds. He is now in p3 and a complete chatterbox. He likes to take his time with most new things and first figure it out then just do it - same with speaking.

Ds had speech delay. I dreamed of hearing him talk, up until he was about 4ish. He's now 11 and I can not make the talking stop!
The turning point for us was getting his eyes checked. It turned out he has very poor eye sight and would not have been able to see mouth shapes or words being formed.
We didn't notice how bad his eyes were as be knew no different other than a blurry world so compensated so well.

Definitely talk to your health visitor about a referral for a sight test (this is usually done at the eye hospital for little ones).

It's always a worry and glad to hear you've had some input.

My brother hardly spoke until he went to nursery and hasn't stopped talking since.

My son was gone 3 before he said more than a word or two. When he started it was like turning a tap on. he had all the vocabulary , and did not shut up. He was the chattiest little boy until he got to his teens. he is 20 now and loves a good natter.
His reading was also delayed and he needed extra support in primary school. By high school he had caught up though and is now in his last year at uni.
try not to worry too much.

I was worried sick about my DGD at just three. Most of her speech was just babble. She did have speech therapy, but just as it began she'd already just started to get the idea, so really took off with the extra help. Now, six months later she's a chatterbox with no sound production issues at all.

What did the speech therapist say to you about your son? What was her assessment?
