My daughter is 5.5 and just randomly said to me ‘I don’t like brown skin’…I was shocked but I think she meant it completely innocently, like if someone said ‘oh I don’t like ginger hair’. Rather than ‘I don’t like people with brown skin’. However, I felt the need to gently pull her up on this, I said I think brown skin is beautiful, we have recently been watching videos of Simone Biles as she loves gymnastics so I pointed that out as someone beautiful and talented who has brown skin, also said it doesn’t matter what people look like it’s whether they are kind etc. and bless her, she came back and said actually I like brown skin now and showed Tiana the Disney princess as an example 🥰. Got me thinking though, I was going to start explaining to her about racism etc and being an ally - we do live in a very ‘white’ area so she only really sees black people in church, none in her school (sounds awful I know and something I worry about!). So just looking for advice on how others would approach this? Any books to help with explaining?
