Since 3am on Friday morning my 4 year old son has been throwing up, he was fine on Friday til about 5pm when he threw up again and since then he hasn't kept anything down and has been quite lifeless.

I thought he was on the mend today as he had managed to keep water down all day but about half an hour ago he brought it back up again.

He's still quite lifeless and is just skin and bone.

Shall I take him to the dr's or wait it out?

Thanks in advance xx

take him if you are unsure

avenanap · 02/03/2008 18:26

Take him to A&E. He sounds dehydrated to me and needs urgent fluids. When was the last time he pee'd?

BecauseImWorthIt · 02/03/2008 18:28

I would take him to the GP tomorrow, especially if he's not keeping water down.

The key is to keep him hydrated - flat Coke/lemonade is very good, (not Diet) as it gets sugar into them which will also help.

Dioralyte, if you have any, is good as it also has essential salts in it.

Hope he's better soon!

is his mouth dry?

AlwaysTheMummy · 02/03/2008 18:30

his lips seem a bit dried out

lots of sips of drink should help him take it in without triggering him to throw up.. also if you try to make it slightly warmer that should help also, cold water or cold drink can offer trigger a reaction more than room temp drink.

If you are worried call NHS direct 0845 46 47.

avenanap · 02/03/2008 18:36

does he have spit on the inside of his mouth?

Dehydration= no spit
Dry lips
Dry skin that's like paper
no pee for 6 hours
sunken eyes
lethargy then no lethargy.

If your child has most of these I'd take him to A&E. Vomiting causes elecrolyte imbalance, children need fluids to replace these. Is he not able to keep any sips of fluids down? Do you have diralyte??

AlwaysTheMummy · 02/03/2008 18:44

no i dont have any diralyte.

he's got no energy at all, his eyes aren't sunken but he looks knackered even though he's been sleeping most of the day.

when i go into the living room he just follows me with his eyes, doesn't move a muscle

I'd give NHS direct a ring, don't leave it until tomorrow, kids can go downhill very quickely. Water's not going to do much, it's the electrolytes that he needs to replace. Is he talking to you?

AlwaysTheMummy · 02/03/2008 19:04

yes he's talking but its very squeeky and high pitched, almost babyish,

avenanap · 02/03/2008 19:04

??? is he making any sense?

AlwaysTheMummy · 02/03/2008 19:05

yes he's fine that way

I would Phone GP 4 same day appt. 1st thing tomro am.

avenanap · 02/03/2008 19:09

I'd definately give NHS direct a ring, they'll either direct you to the out of hours service, give you some advice or direct you to A&E. I hope he's feeling better soon. They'll probably suggest that you give him sips of flat lemonade but I'd give them a call anyway.

AlwaysTheMummy · 02/03/2008 19:11

thank you so much for your help avenanap, you've been great xx
