Help we are on day 9 of nit hell .... I need advice and help. Found live bugs on both children treated with Lyclear next day more live bugs - treated again. Combed everyday twice a day since which is killing me. Found more eggs used Hedrin and finally Nitwits this appeared to clear the children no eggs . Day 9 all eggs gone from both children but loads of brown things coming out. I have also used the above but now today day 9 I suddenly have brown things no eggs. Please help it takes me 3 hours to do my daughters hair and I am so done. We have also condition everyday and used vinegar. What am I doing wrong ?

Have you washed all the bedding, sofa covers etc at 60 degrees?

tonyhawks23 · 02/09/2023 19:19

And done yourself? I hate nits so much we had them for the first time this summer!

InglouriousBasterd · 02/09/2023 19:27

Nitwits is amazing - but I always repeated it after a week to make sure it got them all. I also used to comb through every couple of days in between with cheap conditioner and nitty gritty comb - belt and braces approach!!

I feel your pain, DD went through a year of it and she has thick curly hair - and gave them to me, also with thick curly hair - it takes hours!

We have thick curly hair..... I am so done in 9 days of this. I stupidly thought one treatment would do it. What are the Brown things ? I have combed everyday twice a day with teatree con.

I feel for you! First experience this summer, it was hell. And I have boys with short ish hair.

The brown things are probably eggs.

I didn’t actually use any treatment in the end as I kept hearing that it only kills the live lice, not the eggs.

Use really cheap conditioner, the runnier the better, and a nitty gritty comb. And comb every day if you can. I know it’s hard, I also caught them and have so much hair, it was a nightmare but we were eventually clear. One DC had round 2 a week or so later, I think he recaught them rather than me missing one the first time. I managed to get rid of them in 3 combs that time.

Tinydancer123 · 02/09/2023 23:07

Thank you for responding. How long did it take you ? I am sat here with Hedrin on now but my head is raw ..... I cannot take anything more after this treatment 🤢😓

The problem you have is that so many parents think that one treatment will sort the matter out and don't bother checking. DS1 was in yr2/3 and I only checked him as we'd had the general "we've been alerted to a case of nits in your child's class, please check". He'd had no itching or anything, I ran the comb through and there were things the size of donkeys dropping out! I did a hard core comb, applied conditioner to smother the bastards, combed again, washed and combed. I repeated the combing twice a day (had discovered on Monday night) and by Friday I was totally confident there was nothing left. I'd checked again Sat and Sun and when I checked Monday night 1 bastarding fully grown beast which had obviously been picked up at school that day!

Jesus this sounds awful ! It also sounds never ending. We have had 12 years and never had them . We think the children got them whilst camping this is when this horror story started . I am very aware thar the one treatment is a bloody myth how silly was I...... I have treated us all at least 5 times and still there are brown beasts 😔😔😔Thank you for taking the time to reply I feel like it is ground nit day all I day is comb !

Think about bedding, hats, car seats, cuddly toys in beds etc etc. and keep checking.

Second nitty gritty comb.

It just takes one nit to be missed or one parents to not check...

mumof1or2 · 03/09/2023 00:04

I feel your pain! I went through the same with my two and we got into a never ending cycle because they were re-catching them again at school. In the end I started using tea tree oil shampoo and leave in conditioner so their hair constantly smelt of tea tree oil. It stops them coming back and broke the cycle. Good luck!

sjpkgp1 · 03/09/2023 02:14

It is proper hard work. For my 4, short haircuts for the 2 boys (one once, the other never) for the 2 girls, we did all of the over counter stuff, and that coupled with tea tree shampoo and the cheapest runniest tea tree conditioner and nit comb seemed to do the trick with DD1, but I could not get them out of DD2. What actually worked (in desperation) was olive oil left on in a shower cap for a few hours ( I think coconut oil the same), then lots of tea tree shampoo and the conditioner. We also cut her hair into a bob so the volume was not as bad / painful. Unfortunately, it is right that unless everyone does it, they can get it again. x

Hedrin Once. Comb through hair in sections as you apply. Do not use water to rinse when the time is up. Squirt a large amount of fairy liquid right onto hair, squidge it in. Then coat it thoroughly with talc.
Only after you've done that, rinse with water. Then use a huge amount of conditioner (tea tree is best).
The next day comb through entire head section by section and remove every egg. Nitty Gritty comb doesn't work as well as using your own nails.
Do this daily.
Repeat the process after a week if you're still worried.
My daughter has very thick, waist length hair. This got us through the two times she caught nits in primary school.

Tinydancer123 · 03/09/2023 09:36

Thank you - I fear the hair will suffer if we do this as so dry as curly hair . I have hedrin on as we speak..... not sure my hair can tolerate fairy liquid the nitty gritty comb was pretty harsh.

I feel your pain…our 3yo got nits for the first time about a month ago…I THINK I’ve got rid of hers after I combed through again today but I’m not convinced I’ve got rid of all of mine. I’ve tried several treatments and spent hours combing through both of our hair. It’s bloody relentless.

I do get what you mean about the brown things. They don’t look like eggs but not sure what they are.

justwatchingtelly · 04/09/2023 05:48

I don't know what these brown things are. Can you share a photo?

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 04/09/2023 05:56

As said above use really cheap conditioner. Comb every day until they are gone. Then do regular checks weekly.
I gave up on treatment over the years.
I actually enjoy the process these days. I was horrified initially when eldest Dd got them at high school for the first time. I blame the hair down allowed there as opposed to hair up policy of primary school.

freespirit333 · 04/09/2023 21:19

I’m sure the brown things are eggs, as the eggs are brown. And the eggs are the worst to remove, they cling to the hair.

Took around 5 combs for my boys to be clear, and then one seemed to catch them again a week later as I found one or two live ones as a one off. So worth checking regularly though, I’m not sure I’ll be able to persuade mine to have it done once a week as standard but I’m going to do my best as it’s obviously much easier to catch it early.

Cluelessfirstimer · 05/09/2023 08:41

I got them from my niece two weeks ago. Obviously not for the children but the one thing that got rid of mine over night was dying my hair.
Literally gone in 4 hrs!

Not great advice but if you have them and thinking of changing your hair that will work...!

Tinydancer123 · 11/09/2023 19:09

Hi all they went on the children on day 14 - I am still traumatised and itching but appear to have nothing. May treat again on day 18 just to be sure !!
