Paranoid about hospital visit and SS? Nurse has me worrying...

I have a 16 month-old DS who started walking just around his first birthday. About a week after that he was trying to walk around outside near his water table and fell, banging his head in the process. We was fine but his brow bone was a bit swollen and puffy so we range 111 who said nip to A&E to get him checked - all was fine, no problems at all.

Yesterday, now a proficient walker but new to running, DS is playing with DH backing himself up to the front door and running down the hall into his arms. On one of his runs, DS loses his footing and runs full force into a solid wood door post. Massive bang, instantly crying and instant bump. DH rings 111 immediately whilst I'm calming DS and holding cold compress to bump - again the say due to swelling / bump head to A&E.

I got to A&E and was called in immediately to a room with two nurses and a doctor. Nurse does obs and immediately says 'DS was in a couple of months ago for a head bump wasn't he? What happened this time?' I explained of course but was just felt a bit put off by the way she asked. Doctor was lovely, checks DS all over, feels bump etc and says all seems fine and we can head home with a leaflet about what to watch out for with head bumps.

I've just felt really anxious since the visit and keep replaying the comment she made in my head. I'm just really concerned there has been some note made or a referral and I'm not aware of it. I have spoken to DH who thinks I'm being OTT with worrying but friends say I should be worried. I would appreciate any other insight / reassurance you guys have to offer - thank you!

They will just be following protocol which is necessary in real cases of abuse. The previous visit will obviously be on record. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about.

As pp it's protocol.

My friend took her son in for something and they noticed a bruise on his leg. They said there and then they were getting x and x involved.
It was a bruise from his pre school injection🙈

Shes just doing her job and its quite right that they are on alert to repeat visits or multiple visits (yours isnt multiple but some children are). Dont worry

You've turned up to a&e a couple of times so they are just checking for any underlying causes.

To echo all the PP really. We had a period of about 3 weeks when my eldest daughter was about 2 and a half, in the space of those 3 weeks she fell off a wall in the garden (grazed face, hands and big bump on her forehead), she then slipped in the playground and hit her chin on the metal edge of a roundabout. Had to have it glued back together. Then about a week later, she came running in from the garden having been playing in the paddling pool, slipped on the wooden flooring and split her glued chin open again.
We had a random unannounced visit from social services who wanted a quick chat, took notes about each incident and explained that a certain amount of hospital visits in a short space of time then triggers a welfare check.
It was fine, she had a look around our home and then sent us a letter a few days later explaining they were closing the case.

Yes I can see why it could be seen as worrying but I'm glad they do it, imagine the kids they might miss if they didn't!

Thank you all! Feeling reassured it's just been a case of the nurse following protocol and doing her job and not a concern about DS specifically.

@OnlyYellowRoses your last sentence makes absolutely perfect sense. I think I've just had a panic as it's the first time I've even had something like this happen. Thank you x

I was at A and E 3 times in a fortnight with DS for head bumps (paranoid PFB mum!) He is now approaching his teens and social services are yet to descend on me.

You did the right thing, please try not to worry

We had the same, at around 18 month, dc had 3 a and e visits in the space of 1 month. Health visitor took it upon herself to tell me I was visiting too much and she’d refer me to social services if I went again! Then told her the reasons which of course she hadn’t bothered to read and asked if I should have stayed at home: 1) full body rash came on in 30 mins, 2) crashed into something profuse bleeding from lip which wouldn’t stop 3) crashed into something again (with early stage chicken pox) profuse bleeding again from lip - all 3 drs who saw before plastics consultant confirmed split lip!

I’d like to think they don’t miss the abusive parents.
