My 9 week old little boy is having his tongue tie procedure on Monday, im going to have calpol, a feed and lots of cuddles at the ready. Has anyone got any reassuring advice as im feeling so worried about it, i know hopefully in the long run it will improve things feeding etc but i feel a bit cruel 🙈

It takes seconds, they have a good scream after and a tiny speck of blood but it was no wore than the heel prick test. My ds had it done at 3 weeks old. After a feed he was absolutely fine.

@KateyCuckoo thank you that had made me feel a bit better, do they let you stay with them whilst they do it?

It doesn’t really hurt them and it’s over in seconds. My DS was more annoyed about having someone in his mouth than the cut himself. No need for Calpol.
Yes you stay with them, takes a moment and then you feed them right away. That’s it. I promise it’s worse for us than them.

Both mine had theirs done, although a bit younger than your son. They took them out of the room, but they were back within 5 minutes. As the pp says, both screaming blue murder but in both cases they stopped almost instantly for a feed.
Top tip is to try to have them hungry beforehand as immediate feeding is by far the best comforter and healer. It’s an absolute game changer for BF and much better for the baby to have it done now rather than later so you’re doing the right thing.

@BuffaloCauliflower im relieved that i can stay with him thank you. I wasnt sure about the Calpol itself i was just going to take it with us and see what the hospital advised as i know how distraught he was when he had his 8 week injections 🙈

Mine hardly noticed the procedure at all.

Your DS will be fine x

@TwinMummaX the jabs are very much no fun you’re right. This is much quicker and easier, literally a couple of seconds. The tongue/mouth heal very easily as well.

My tongue tie wasn’t spotted or dealt with until I was 11, and several things would have been a hell of a lot simpler if it had been. You’re doing exactly the right thing for your baby.

Hi op, my dc had it done at a few weeks old. He slept through the entire process, the doctor found it hilarious, she did the snip two times, to take it back a bit further after the first snip and he still didn't wake up!
Then slept all the way home and woke up after his mega nap none the wiser!

nevynevster · 31/08/2023 07:36

Literally took less than. 30 secs. I held the baby and then popped him on the boob afterwards and he was fine. Made feeding à lot easier !

Thank you everyone i feel so much better now reading all of your replies. I am probably over thinking and worrying far too much x

My baby had a TT correction.

If i had realised how straightforward it was I wouldn’t have waited 4 weeks for a hospital appt for her, I would have done it myself!

We attended local paed hospital. They gave me a blanket to wrap her in so she couldn’t flail her arms and when she opened her mouth to scream in protest at being restrained they popped a pair of round ended scissors in and went snip.
5 seconds later she had my nipple in her mouth and her eyes wide open in shock as she realised she was drowning in milk now she could suck properly.

I know it scary when it’s your tiny baby but it couldn’t be more straightforward.

Ours was over in less than 1 minute and I was left angry they they had let my baby wait 4 weeks for that! We could have attended outpatients and just waited for someone to have a spare moment but they left her and me struggling to feed for 4 weeks!
