8 mo baby cold at night , to not follow tog guidelines ?

Hi, I’ve always followed the guidelines and baby been fine however since he’s gone into his big cot the last month he seems a lot more cold.

when it was warm the other month and was averaging 23/24 his chest was cold in a short sleeve so put him in a long sleeve and 1 tog bag and he was fine.

now bedroom last night was 22.4 when go up but seems to drop to 21 at night and the guides say 1 tog and short or long sleeve vest but the last couple nights he seems too cold and woke so many times last night crying but I know cold is better than warm but I’m a ftm and worried to go either way , his hands are like ice blocks and his tummy and neck very cool too.

im Scared a 2.5 tog would be too much of an increase is there anything else I could add to make him abit more warm or just Increase the tog? Sorry for sounding so useless he’s currently wearing what he did at 23/24 that’s why I’m thinking he needs more on too

Maybe put him in a sleepsuit rather than just a vest.

headcheffer · 30/08/2023 18:38

Agree with PP, try a short sleeve vest and sleepsuit together before increasing the weight of sleeping bag. Come winter he will likely be in a long sleeve vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog sleeping bag (unless you have a very warm house!).

We’ve currently got DS in a sleepsuit and 1.5 tog sleeping bag. His room is about 21 degrees and he seems warm enough in those.

We are up north and mines in a vest, sleepsuit and 2 tog bag. We have a very cold house every when his room says 21!

Charlotteap · 30/08/2023 19:16

Thanks everyone that’s what I was wondering before jumping to thicker tog. I will try a a sleepsuit tonight instead of long sleeve vest

We do short sleeve vest, sleepsuit and 1 tog most nights and baby seems fine. We got 0.5 tog for the hot nights and will get 2.5 now the weather is changing, but still mostly with both vest and sleepsuit unless it was really hot weather.

Charlotteap · 30/08/2023 21:01

Thank you does it have to be a footless sleepsuit or just a normal ?

Normal sleepsuit will be fine

Tisfortired · 30/08/2023 21:04

My 8 month old is currently in vest, long sleeved/trousered pyjamas and. 1.5 tog sleeping bag. He always either wears a vest and babygrow or pyjamas.

I have already bought him a 3 tog sleeping bag that has long sleeves ready for when the weather turns. We live in a big drafty Victorian terrace and it does get chilly!

Charlotteap · 30/08/2023 21:10

Thank you very much I was worried about going off the guide recommendations too much but he really has felt cold the last few nights. Hoping he feels better tonight in his sleepsuit l, thanks again

As he is over 6 months you can probably relax a little and not worry so much about the guidelines and just follow your instinct. If they seem cold then add a layer.

wishIwasonholiday10 · 30/08/2023 21:51

I agree with the previous poster. The guides are only a rough guide anyway and every baby could be different and I think they err on the side of cool to avoid being responsible for newborn babies accidentally overheating.

Different brands of sleeping bag will vary a bit in warmth anyway so you just have to follow your instincts and add a layer at a time until they seem happy.

gemloving · 30/08/2023 21:56

This is my go to for my kids. My babe is in a long sleeved PJ set, 1 tog but the sleeping bag is only half zipped, will be further zipped when we go to sleep. Its 21+ in his room but he no longer wears a vest xx

I've always found the guidelines left both of mine cold apart from on the really warm nights.

I always know too, because they start waking around 4/5am. Always a sigh they're cold for my two!

My second in particular is a cold child and she was in a 2.5 tog until about June and in the winter she's in a 3.5 tog with sleeves, which according to the guidelines is only for arctic conditions!

I play with layers first, long sleeves and maybe a short sleeve vest and then if still cold then move up a tog. Both mine slept better in more layers or a higher tog than the guidelines suggested.

That's what we've been doing too.

GG1986 · 30/08/2023 22:00

My 7 month old has a long sleeved sleepsuit(with feet) and a 1.5 tog bag on and seems fine. A sign baby is cold is lying with their hands under their body, is he doing this? And also waking around 4 or 5 am?

SErunner · 30/08/2023 22:05

Go with your gut. Our daughter has always needed far more than the recommended, as have many other babies I know. She's currently in long sleeve pyjamas and a 2.5 tog bag. Don't know room temp but house isn't cold.

DanceMumTaxi · 30/08/2023 22:14

I completely understand the guidelines are important, but dd would never have slept if I’d followed the guidelines to the letter. She hated being cold and wouldn’t sleep and always needed a bit extra. I was careful not to over-heat her, but I think you’d be fine to add an extra layer.

RedHelenB · 31/08/2023 04:28

I'd pop a cellular blanket on after the first wake up if you think he's cold.

Charlotteap · 31/08/2023 13:11

Thanks everyone the sleepsuit did the trick, he’s currently teething and took him a long time for me to get him to sleep last night. But he slept all way through till 9:30! Should have seen the panic I woke up in 😂 and no 4am/5am crying. Feel bad that’s he’s clearly been cold the last month or so but at least now I know

@gemloving thank you for that , that looks a lot better (not as cold) than the few guides I use

Only thing to add to this is they shouldn't wear hats indoors as far as I recall, it affects their ability to thermoregulate effectively. Glad you had a better night! This time of year is always a bit tricky as the evenings can still be quite warm but temp drops a lot overnight.

dementedpixie · 31/08/2023 13:52

I agree that hats shouldn't be worn as babies lose heat through their head and can overheat with a hat on.
