2 year old and new born in same room

How do you keep your new born in the same room with an active 2 year old who wants to play with the ball and brings the scooter into the living room. Right now we are keeping them in separate rooms as much as possible or we carry the newborn with us.

It may not be viable as the baby grows and may be awake quite a lot. With our first, we had play gym so she can kick and play on the floor. But not sure how to make it work for the second as the toddler is very much active.

How about a baby bouncer and how long can we have the baby in there at a time? Any other ideas would be great.

Please share your experiences. Thanks.

Don’t allow the football or the scooter in the house? Surely those are basic house rules with or without a new baby. My youngest is 2 so I get what they’re like but in the interests of my house not getting trashed there are some activities you have to draw a line at and need to stay outdoors!! But also I really recommend the Tripp Trapp highchair with the newborn pod as baby is well off the ground. Then you can probably plan the newborns floor time for when the toddler is napping and/or off the floor engaged with something else so for example colouring or play doh at the table or watching TV.

Have a safe place to put baby in each room, and bring toddler with you all the time was my go to.

And no scooter/ball in the house ever! One thing that worked for me - fill a travel cot with soft balls and pop toddler in for a play then give them a second game of putting all the balls back in.

Well why on earth are scooter and ball allowed in the house those are garden activities here!! Dd is 2 and understand that inside we play toys or books.

My older two were close in age and just made sure there were baby safe activités and used travel cot as baby shelter/cage Grin

I would just bring baby with me in each room for example if I was cleaning one room id put baby in bouncer in kitchen while I cleaned, and let toddler play where he wants to play, or maybe a baby gate on the living room while baby is sleeping in there and let toddler follow you around in each room, then floor time for baby you just be in the room obviously to make sure no accidents happen

Play pen. Best things ever. And take them both out to the nearest space every day for scooter and football time.

TheBarbieEffect · 30/08/2023 11:54

Yeah absolutely no balls or scooters in the house. That should be a rule anyway.

CuriousPorg · 30/08/2023 11:56

Cage the older one. We had this in lockdown although 4yo home learning and cruising 10 month old. I put the 4yo in the play pen with a desk.

In your shoes have a travel play pen with toddler stuff in it you can move to each room and separate them if needs be

Clefable · 30/08/2023 11:57

I never had to keep them separately like that, unless I was leaving baby in Moses basket while asleep for a few mins to do something in another room and would take older DC with me. Otherwise we were in the same room. It never really occured to me to try keep my children in separate rooms when I was around to supervise them.

I wouldn't have a ball being thrown about in the house or a scooter ridden about if there is a baby on the floor (or in general) so those things would just be put away where a 2yo can't get them and used for garden/outside.

" play with the ball and brings the scooter into the living room." - this is a no, surely? Those are outdoor activities.

BarnacleBeasley · 30/08/2023 12:04

If you've got space you could put the baby (and the play gym) into a play pen so baby won't get trampled. I also don't allow scooters etc. in the house though!

Mamalistens · 30/08/2023 19:44

Yes I will start following the house rules. Will look for a suitable play pen too. Thank you all for your advice.

Outdoor toys and indoor toys. Be rigid about it. Balls and scooters are definitely outdoor toys!!
