I've seen mentioned on a few threads about after school activities.
Just curious what sort of things parents sign their kids up for and how many activities you organise per week??

My ds is going to be starting Reception, can't see how he'll have energy for stuff after school so curious what others do.

Don’t do anything for the first term, they will be far too tired!

Eventually a swimming lesson once a week, plus a something in a group (Squirrel Scouts for example). No need for much more than that!

Mine continued with their weekly swimming lesson and football lesson that they already were doing. That was plenty in reception.

Mine is doing 4 clubs a week - I recognise that is high! It is more to balance the time previously spent in nursery childcare but recognise we may need to see how it goes and consider a childminder instead of it's too much

I think there's a mix between after school club (which is needed for childcare reasons) and 'hobby' clubs. DS is starting next week and we're not doing either for the first term at least as we've found an after school nanny so don't need the childcare but I expect come the spring, we'll look at doing something. I know my DS' school runs a cooking class for reception children after school one day a week for example but I'd also be keen on him doing swimming or something like karate to help build his confidence.

Mine is starting reception and will continue with swimming and gymnastics.

DS is starting reception this year and he'll be carrying on with swimming and music. One after school and the other on a Saturday.

SnapdragonToadflax · 29/08/2023 15:35

Mine starts reception this year and doesn't do any clubs at the moment. He'll go to a childminder after school Monday-Thursday because we're working, and I'm told he'll be tired at first at the weekend so I didn't want to sign him up for anything on Saturday mornings.

I need to start him with swimming lessons, so planning on doing that in the spring or summer term on Saturdays. The school don't offer any clubs for Reception children (other than after-school club).

My DC was way too knackered in the first term of reception for any clubs! August child so very young & struggling at start of term. Gradually introduced the after school club for childcare in later terms & they do cooking once a week too which has been great. But it’s mainly play and or / artwork / watching a film etc. So that once or twice a week is good. Year 1 starting soon and they want to do a dance class but I won’t start that until the second term again. There are also choir/football/ French/ science options through the school but definitely nothing in term 1 until they start to get used to the new class and expectations of them!

Mine is also about to start reception and currently does swimming once a week and gymnastics once a week, both at the weekend.

Just Rainbows here but I may add in a weekend group at some point in the year.

DD did lots of activities from the first term of reception - she'd come from nursery with a 4.30pm pickup and enrichment clubs at school meant she was picked up at 4.20pm, so not too different. Most of her nursery friends were picked up later, and when they started school they were going into breakfast/after school clubs 8am-6pm, so her day didn't seem too busy on comparison and she wasn't too tired. She loved doing the extracurricular clubs and mixing with dc from different years. She did a weekend club as well, one was a parent + child activity so that was nice bonding time with DH, and we later added swimming on a Saturday morning.
