Can I extend my maternity leave

I work for a health trust/NHS job. I had originally outlined with HR that I would be taking 9 months maternity leave and then planning to use AL for 6 weeks before returning to work. This was agreed with management. HR advised that I notify a month before returning to work (month 8) to confirm I was returning otherwise they assume you are taking a year, to allow my wage to be paid in time.

Now I've had the baby I'm starting to feel I want to take the full year. My baby is EBF and will not really go to anyone except me and sometime DH so stressing about having to put her in daycare at 10 months and feel a bit if extra time will help. Has anyone done this? I won't get paid the last 3 months and then would have the AL to use when I return. No idea what my manager will think or if she has to agree. Any advice would be appreciated

Yes just give them plenty of notice, if you do it within the correct time frame they cannot refuse.

Lots of new mums take the full year. It's a statutory right so they can't refuse as long as you give sufficient notice that you've changed your plan

Could you return at 10.5 months and then use the annual leave to have the next 6 weeks paid, taking you up to a year? Then you're only 1.5 months unpaid. I doubt they would refuse this.

This may be an option but I'll have to speak to HR as on the forms it's basically 9 or 12 months, we would definitely struggle as our oldest is going to an after schools starting in October and itll be Christmas too but don't know any other way as she won't take a bottle or cup and only feeds to sleep on me

You can take any time you want and extend it up to before the day you're due back. You don't have to take 9 or 12 months. Just tell them the date you'll want to go back ons

I work for an NHS Trust and took 9 months and had my pay averaged out over those 9 months. After 8 months I wasn't ready to go back so extended it to 12 months (the last three months were unpaid) then took annual leave that I'd accrued and carried over and ended up having 15 months off.

can I just put in there . I would save a weeks annual leave to cover child sickness when they go into childcare .
