Weaning/ nappy rash help

Hi all

FTM so looking for some advice

baby is 6.5 months. Up until a week ago he has been on cow and gate comfort milk as he was really colicky and constipated when younger. From around 3 months he pooped around 1/2 times a day max

approx a week ago we went into the cow and gate toddler milk which I know can affect poop. Also been weaning with purees

since then baby has been pooping 5/10 times a day. Sometimes it’s a big poop and slightly runny. Most of the time it’s harder, not hard as in constipated but rabbit droppings so bits at a time. Due to this he has got a bad nappy rash no matter how
much cream we put on. We use the yellow
metanium stuff. Skin is now red and sore and shiny like a layer has come off from all the poop and wiping.

do I need to get stronger cream from doctors for his bum or is the yellow stuff just as good?

also is this normal for poop to be so effected by weaning and changing milk for over a week now?

thanks

Before you go to the GP I'd swap back to the milk you were using. Follow on and toddler milks aren't recommended by the NHS and it does sound like this new milk isn't suiting your LO Flowers

ChickenSandwichandCupofTea · 28/08/2023 17:26

I would change back to the original milk. Follow on milk is only sold because the formula companies are allowed to advertise it. My LO was on C&G Comfort milk until she turned 1, then went onto cows milk and was fine.

Have you tried Bepanthen nappy care ointment. Worked like a dream on mine

Have a read of this on CMPA before you see the GP @H44123. I think from the symptoms you've described, there is a good chance they might have it Flowers

H44123 · 29/08/2023 20:40

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto thank you. I mentioned this to HV and she said possibly. Strange he has been ok on comfort though but I think it’s slightly hydrolysed or something. Had 2 bottles of comfort today and no more poop since around 3pm so that’s an improvement!

I feel annoyed/sad if it does turn out to be CMPA as I thought that when he was younger but got fobbed off. I very much doubt they will be helpful this time and just tell me to stay on this milk. When I think back I tried one of those Ella’s kitchen yoghurt pouches and it went straight through him I just thought fruit but maybe slight dairy. I just want his bum to heal for now. Then once he goes back to normal will introduce normal once to see. Xx

The more you post the more it does sound like CMPA. The link I posted I think suggests if how to talk to the Dr about it. When I went to the GP initially, I printed off the article and took it with me.

I'd also ask read that ad insist fir a referral to a Paediatric Dietician. The wait will probably be long but they can supervise you through introducing milk via the Milk Ladder. I don't think it's advised to introduce it until they're one so you might get an appoint by then, hopefully.

If you want any tips on what DF foods to try LO with, just let me know. The Allergy Section is usually quite useful too WinkFlowers

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto aw thank you so
much.

im terrified it might be CMPA with what it could entail but I know I need to know to help him the best I can.

I have private medical through work, if it does go that route I wonder if that might speed things up

thank you for your advice and help! Xx

Don't be terrified. If he does have it, then it sounds as though it's probably non-Ige rather than anaphylactic.

Could your insurance get him to see an Allergy Specialist?

Let husband bum dry after every clean. Use the metamium and then go over the top with sudocrem, then it creates a barrier and prevents the metanium from rubbing off. This worked best when my LO had a bad nappy rash.

Faz469 · 29/08/2023 21:52

His bum lol

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 30/08/2023 07:49

Funny how you got Husband and Bum mixed up there @Faz469, is that a bit of a Freudian Slip? Grin

You'd think so but I'm not married. Just sleep deprived with a 7 week old 🤣

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 30/08/2023 11:46

Metanium works a dream but its really really important that you only apply a thin layer not a thick layer. I was horrified to learn it can cause poisoning in large amounts.
Stay away from acidic purees if weaning the Ella's kitchen and the like are very sugary and will only aggravate baba at this time. Avoid tomato and anything citrus until the nappy rash sorted.
Try baby with small pieces of chopped banana, avocado, quite bland porridge, stuff that is healthy to digest. Maybe some pieces of hard boiled egg. Have a little look at the solid starts website it's amazing. Some is behind a pay wall but there's loads of free info on there and I always found if I googled solid starts + the food i was curious about it took me straight to the page.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 30/08/2023 11:49

Also it is perfectly normal for digestive system to go a bit haywire when first weaning, so please don't blame yourself or thing you are doing anything wrong, bit of trial and error and it'll all work out. Forgot to say and I'm sure you are but as much fresh air on their little bum as possible. I'd do nappy changes with cooled boiled water and cotton pads while everything is so aggravated and if possible time to air out before fresh nappy on.

H44123 · 30/08/2023 13:41

Thank you all. Left weaning alone yesterday and went back to comfort milk. He seems to be pooing a lot less, and pushing alot less! So I think it’s giving his bum a chance to heal. Definitely not as red today.

@Wavescrashingonthebeach thats good to know re metanium.. I had no clue about the potential poisoning!!

trying to let everything settle for a few days then will try diary to see what that does as a bit of a trial. I have a feeling it’s either the milk or diary rather than food that was the issue as such but we shall see!

thank you all for your kind words and advice 🌸🌸

Please, please don't give him dairy in a few days if you think he's got CMPA. I have it and I'd hate to think of a small baby being given dairy on purpose when the reaction is so bloody miserable to live with.

Much better to speak to Allergy UK and your GP if you think dairy might be the issue.
