Teething at 3 months ?

Northtosouth · 25/08/2023 11:21

is 3 months too young to start teething?
baby is 15 weeks and is constantly drooling, chewing hands, cheeks are a bit red too. He’s being a bit whingy too which is unlike him, unless I distract him by singing/playing etc and then he seems ok. Could it be teething or something else I’m totally missing

Both mine had their first teeth through by 16 weeks so definitely not too young.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 25/08/2023 11:40

First 2 teeth through at 16w and the rest followed similarly quickly, always in 2s.

Dose up on anbesol when needed.

Some babies are actually born with teeth, OP! Definitely not too early.

Not under six months.

Mine started teething at 13 weeks, has a full set now at not quite two.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 25/08/2023 11:49

Oh yeah, bonjela up to 5m then Anbesol. Always found anbesol better once he could have that.

Definitely, magic stuff! The liquid especially.

I always had a stockpile of two spares as was worried they’d a discontinue it like they did in Canada. It saved us from many a sleepless night.

My son had it after 8 weeks when he started teething

I didn't realise at the time. He's obviously fine but they can have it at 5 months.

My daughter had her first tooth at 6 weeks so it's not too early. Although I do remember the smug HV telling me she was far too young and that I was wrong, she didn't look so smug when I took her the next week for a weigh in and showed her the first tooth.

In America they won’t give it before 2! So I would be very hesitant to give it to a child under 6 months.

I don't really listen to America. I go by over here. But my son is perfectly fine from having it before 5 months. He didn't get it all the time but only ever twice a day on bad days.

Northtosouth · 25/08/2023 12:29

thank everyone, will stock up on bonjela.
did anyone use the teething dummies? He can’t hold anything in his hands for more than 10 seconds at the moment so thinking the dummies might work better

In America they would rather have guns on the streets than have a kinder egg so I wouldn't hold much faith in that.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 25/08/2023 13:45

@Northtosouth herbal teething granules from boots worked wonders with my eldest. I think they can have those from 3 months but check as it was a long time ago for me.

Seeline · 25/08/2023 14:01

Yes - we always had the teething powders with us. Worked with both my DCs.

Clefable · 25/08/2023 14:05

Drooling, chewing on hands, etc. is developmental behaviour for babies. It might be related to teeth, but every single baby in my antenatal group was 'teething' from 3mo and none got teeth for another three months (and my DD was the first, and she had zero signs of it).

Teething is blamed for absolutely everything for the first 18 months of a baby's life, but in reality there's a lot of developmental stuff going on that is just as likely and probably more likely to cause whinginess in a 3mo.

Clefable · 25/08/2023 14:09

(The drooling is actually do with increased saliva production for beginning babbling; babies drool as they haven't learned how to keep all this new saliva in their mouths! Chewing is about exploration too, hence why babies shove everything in their mouths for months and months; it's just another way of experiencing textures).

That's not to say drooling and chewing aren't always signs of teething, they can be. But they are also just totally normal developmental phases that babies go through.

These were the greatest invention for when my ds started teething but wouldn't take a dummy
First tooth also came in at 13 weeks and had a full smile by his 1st birthday

kernowpicklepie · 25/08/2023 14:46

As @Clefable says. A lot of babies start chewing hands and drooling loads around 3 months.
My DD did and she didn't get teeth until 8 months.
DS is the same and he's 8 months but no teeth yet.

Lots of people say they're teething but very few are at that age, it's usually just that they've found their hands and want to constantly shove them in their mouth

Ashton & Parsons teething gel for under 5months, it comes in a tube with a gentle silicone gum massaging dispenser tip 👌 or the A&P powder is ok too under 5m.

Mine had 2 teeth by 18w and a full set early too!

Toddler101 · 25/08/2023 17:01

And a damp flannel in the fridge given to baby to chomp on works a treat too.
