Flying with a baby

Hi,

I am looking to take my mum away for a long weekend to Amsterdam (from London) next year - so a short flight and the usual city break activities.
I am currently 6 months pregnant and wondering if it will be easier pre-6 months or post?
I am conscious it may be easier to go before weaning starts, but perhaps easier after 6 months when baby can be in a travel pushchair?

Any words of wisdom appreciated! x

You can get travel strollers suitable from birth. It's much easier before they can move.

Easy peasy when they’re tiny. We took DD to New York at 6 weeks and it was similar to any other city break.

Just take a sling (don’t bother with a buggy) and do what you’d do pre-baby.

Holidays need to be more baby-orientated when they are weaning/ crawling/ have a proper routine.

The one time to avoid I would say is 6-9 months when you’re weaning and they aren’t quite eating everything yet. We’ve booked to take our second on holiday at 4 months to avoid that faff. After 10 months it’s quite easy to feed them on the go

Yes, much easier pre-crawling. Mine both crawled early and were walking by 10m, I wished we'd done more travelling when they were able to be strapped away in a sling!

Much easier the smaller they are!

Mine first went on planes at 3 and 5 weeks (do not necessarily recommend this for your own sanity, but doable), and regularly throughout babyhood and toddler ages, and the early months were definitely easiest.

Slings are good if they work for you (didn't for me, did for DH), and it's easy enough to take a buggy. If you're going to places with cobblestones, bring a buggy with inflated tyres, not hard ones!

I'd recommend not flying before 3 months as their immunity is really weak then, and airplanes/airports are hotbeds of infection.

Just before weaning might be easiest although early stages of weaning where they only need one meal are quite easy too. We did find a lot of restaurants and hotels were not very buggy friendly In Amsterdam due to being small or having steep stairs (would have researched buggy friendly places more in advance in hindsight). The sling is all good if your baby likes it and will sleep in it but mine didn’t like sleeping in it by that stage so we needed to take the buggy everywhere.
