Milk at 1 year old with multiple food allergies

Baby has just turned 1 and I’m wanting to stop breastfeeding for a number of reasons.

Anyone got any suggestions for alternative milk we can offer? He is IGE to dairy, egg and soy and non ige to oats. He has been given a prescription from the GP of neocate as a ’top up’ before but refuses to drink it because of the taste. Any advice appreciated

Would pea protein milk be any good? You should have a paediatric dietitian who should be able to advise you.

abbs1 · 22/08/2023 20:51

Your little one should be under a dietician and allergy team to get more help and advice but my daughter has similar allergies and I was bf but wanted to stop. She wouldn't take neocate as it tastes awful so she has the fresh koko milk that's fortified. Is your little one gaining weight well?

Coffeaddict · 22/08/2023 20:51

Yeah that is a complex mix did you get referred to peads, if not you can request your GP sends you as it's worth talking to them to ensure they getting a balanced diet.

In the mean time my sons nursery used to use coconut milk ( which my son subsequently reached to 😭) could that be am option? You didn't mention nuts so what about almond milk?

Rice milk could be a good start. Rice doesn’t really have any allergens so probably ‘safe’. Given the other allergies I’d have him checked for nuts before offering one of those (if you haven’t already)

Twizbe · 22/08/2023 20:58

Huh didn’t know that.

Well the other alternative is just no milk at all. They don’t technically ‘need’ it after one. I might look for a good multivitamin though

febbabies2023 · 22/08/2023 21:02

Please do not use rice milk!

My LG is non IGE to dairy and I had her dietician app the other day actually
Could you try almond or coconut milk if you can't use oats?

This website was sent over by our dietician as well so this could help you too?

Thank you for all your replies. We are under a consultant and dietician however our next consultant appointment isn’t until January. I’ve also rang the dietician and the next phone appointment is a month away so was just looking for some recommendations in the meantime from others who may have been in similar situations x

How allergic is your child to milk? There are other milks besides Neocate but that is the only truly artificial one as far as I know. We had Similac Alimentum for one of mine but she could tolerate the casein based prescription formulas, she is the only one of mine that was fully weaned by 15 months.

Whyohwhyohwhy123 · 22/08/2023 21:13

I was in a similar situation and I kept bf. The first dc I weaned at 2 years 9 months and he doesn’t have any milk type drink now. Second dc has just turned three and still isn’t weaned.
You can fairly quickly get rid of the day time feeds and just do a bedtime and middle of the night feed and then skipping feeds or going a couple of days without feeding doesn’t have any impact on your supply ie you’ve enough but don’t ever have that full feeling.

We had the same allergies - and LO hated neocate , we blended with banana. Complete pain in the bottom - but seem to remove the metallic taste. You have to do trial and error for how much banana . Said LO is now 6ft at 14 and grew out of Soy & wheat - still allergic to dairy. Has Epipens. Just side note - if possible just do the blood test as skin prick tests are so variable I found them unreliable and a waste of time. Also whilst it may feel overwhelming - you do adapt and the UK is much better at allergies, schools, eating out etc - than some countries. Go back to the consultant if you still can't feed Neocate - they might have an alterative. I was a,so breastfeeding - wanting to stop - so have felt a bit of what your experiencing. Feel free to PM.

If you do want him to drink the neocate as both mine had it as well in the early days add vanilla essence. If that doesn’t do the trick add some sugar as well. As soon as they start drinking it taper the sugar off. I never did manage to stop using vanilla essence though. You need to put enough vanilla essence in the actually mask the flavour. Mine also preferred it a bit hotter.

But they need 350 mg of calcium a day as well as vitamin D and iodine and with those allergies it will be struggle to get that from food alone.

blahblahlandgoogoodoll · 22/08/2023 21:26

I think you're going to struggle as coconut and rice milk are not recommended because of low nutritional value / arsnic content.

I think a neocate / amino acid formula will be your only option.

Our baby is on neocate and does actually like it but our GP said we could add vanilla or similar to help with the taste if necessary. Perhaps you could experiment?

You need to seek a referral to the dietician really so they can give you proper advice

Alexahelp · 22/08/2023 22:31

Mine had the same combination of allergies. Koko Super (coconut milk based, higher calorie than some) is fine from 1 as it’s well fortified, as are some pea protein based milks.

Also look for fortified coconut yogs to up the calcium intake, plus bread. And oranges!

Floppyfrog · 22/08/2023 22:35

Mine has these allergies and either drinks koko or mighty pea unsweetened.

MCMP13 · 22/08/2023 22:50

Yeah he is gaining weight well and has had both skin prick and blood tests and tested positive on both. He’s only ever had milk twice directly and had to go to a&e both times.

I have all the questions for the dietician but it is a month away so thank you for all your suggestions. I’m struggling with cutting it all out of my diet too and don’t know how much longer I can do it for. It’s reassuring to know others are in similar situations and there are options as I’ve felt like I have no choice but to keep breastfeeding lately.

Think we are going to try flavouring the neocate to see if he will take it but I will pump along side this to keep my supply up just incase😭😭😭. Does anyone know if the GP will keep prescribing neocate past 1 year old if he does actually drink it? Also nervous about them stopping it.

Alexahelp · 22/08/2023 23:03

The advice on milk has changed really recently, it used to be full fat cows milk until 2, which meant that all
dairy alternatives weren’t recommended till then (and therefore you were stuck with prescription or carrying on BFing). Now it’s changed and you can have alternatives I suspect they may want to cut the prescription from 1, but I imagine only if it’s appropriate and they’re drinking something else well. They won’t just get rid if there’s no other option.

My 2/12 yr old son, F, has been on Neocate LCP since he was 10 weeks old. As his taste buds developed, he wasn't quite so fond of the neocate taste.
I found that adding coconut milk to each bottle helped. It sweetened the flavour enough so the neocate wasn't so bitter.
Because the alternate non-dairy milks are suitable for under-threes, I told my GP I had to keep F on neocate for a bit longer as he's allergic to soya baby formula as well as animal-dairy!
Hope that helps!
