Weaning advice!!

Hi all,

Just hoping for some advice around my baby’s feeding! DS is nearly 7 months old and we started weaning just before 6 months.

We started with single veggies which he absolutely hated and still seems to hate! He loves sweeter foods such as banana porridge and will tolerate sweeter veggies such as sweetcorn.

We are about a month into weaning now and he is still really struggling with more savoury flavours.

He will take veggie purées if mixed with fruit but I really want to get him out of the habit of this.

I guess I was looking for some advice as to whether this is normal? Should we keep persisting?

We are currently spoon feeding (was hoping to do BLW but found it quite anxiety inducing due to worries about choking etc. It’s something I’d like to explore in the near future but not sure I’m ready just yet!)

Grateful for any advice/similar experiences!! :)

Have you tried sweeter veg such as sweet potato or parsnip?

My DD was the same, I found that making pasta and basically hiding veg in the sauce helped, like you I also spoon fed. I just use to basically mash/blend whatever I was having really and only occasionally made her something just for her. She's now 18mo and eats pretty much anything although she has now gone off sweet things like yogurts/custard which she use to live on at times! X

Thanks for your replies!

He does tolerate sweet potato and sweetcorn but that’s about it at the moment. He’s starting nursery next week so I’m hoping the staff there will help him with developing the foods he will eat.

Pasta idea sounds great - I’ll definitely be trying that.

You may find he'll eat all sorts at nursery, my DD eats so much stuff at nursery that she refuses at home so I think seeing other children eat does help x

My DS was like this. Loved fruit but hated veg purees. One day I just blended our dinner and he gobbled it up, I was shocked! He liked more complex savoury flavours rather than blended broccoli.... And who can blame him. I wouldn't wanna eat that either. Might not work but could be worth a go? The first dinner I tried was fish pie as well. I could have fainted 😂
I know you're anxious about BLW and I get it, I was too but DS also does better with finger foods that are savory. Loves toast and pitta with hummus etc

P.s have you tried the fruit purees yourself? They bang. I'm not surprised babies love them. I'd happily have them for dessert!

It's normal! My daughter is 19 months now and still doesn't eat vegetables unless they are hidden! 😅
The only thing is worked for us was cheese: she loved cauliflower- broccoli- cheese- mash, but without cheese, there is no way she would have touched those. I made a lot of pies (shepherd's pie, lentil pie etc), blended together and she loved it!
I kept watching YouTube videos and saw how babies just eat the vegetables and I thought I was doing something wrong. Every baby is different, some just always going to prefer fruit.
My daughter still loves fruit -she would eat it all day if I let her, and hates vegetables (except when she's at nursery; I guess she enjoys eating with children more).
