9 month old has eye infection that has caused a rash on his face?

hey guys. Sorry for so many posts! My 9 month old has an eye infection (conjunctivitis) in both his eyes now and he’s been rubbing his eyes and itching a lot. We’re using chloramphenicol eye drops that the GP prescribed and it’s been difficult to get those in his eyes. I feel so helpless seeing him so uncomfortable and constantly rubbing his eyes. How can I stop him from rubbing his eyes? Also, is it normal that his eye infection is causing a rash on his face? He has small spots all over his cheeks and he keeps itching constantly. It’s so upsetting seeing him like this 😭 I don’t know what to do. Again guys, I’m sorry for so many posts! I just don’t know what to do. Really worried about the rash now too

I’m just so stressed. It’s one thing after another. First the eye infection which he still has and his eyes are so red. And now the rash all over his face 😭 it’s like small spots all over his face from itching so much. I’ve taken him to the gp today and 2 days back too and I can’t just keep taking him. But the rash is worse now than it was in the morning when I took him because he’s been itching so much. What shall I do? 😭 sorry if I’m being annoying and posting way too much I know I am

He will be fine. Never nice when little ones are poorly but it will soon pass.

SirVixofVixHall · 21/08/2023 21:56

Poor little boy ! I can’t see the rash there but I think it is worth getting him seen again and the rash checked out. Also conjunctivitis tends to improve pretty quickly on medication so it is worth getting him checked again anyway as his eyes are still red.
I hope he is better soon OP. Gorgeous little boy !

Discharge from the eye - sticky or watery?

Mischance · 21/08/2023 22:31

I had trouble getting drops into my DD's eyes and she developed an infection in the tissues below her eyes and on her cheeks. Basically cellulitis. She needed systemic antibiotics.

Watery discharge and not too much of it

Thank you so much guys. I just can’t see him like this it’s so difficult 🥺 he looks so helpless. He just fell asleep now and I’ve put socks on his hands to stop him from itching his face and eyes. Is this safe? It’s okay right? Is there a risk of overheating?

Looks viral rather than bacterial. That's why you have the rash. Should clear up without drops in 7 days

Thank you so much. He hasn’t been coughing or sneezing or anything tbh, he didn’t have a fever recently. It can still be viral? What’s the difference between viral and bacterial conjunctivitis?

Earlgreyandcake · 22/08/2023 04:10

Bacterial is very gunky and sticky. Treated with chloramphenicol.
Viral more watery - antibiotics don't help- self resolves in 7 days. Careful with hygiene measures as very contagious

The rash is now on his arms too. Baby is asleep but I felt it on his arms and his face is quite bad too. Now I’m definitely thinking viral rash. Shall I call GP for an appointment again at 9am or take baby to A&E? Very worried.

If you are very worried take him to A&E

I am really worried because the rash is getting worse but he’s sleeping peacefully and I don’t think I should wake him right now? He seems to be comfortable, he woke up to feed an hour ago and he was itching himself again so I again covered his hands and that’s how he managed to fall asleep. Should I wait until he wakes up?

OP call 111 instead of Mumsnet and ask what they advise.

SirVixofVixHall · 22/08/2023 15:16

How is he now OP ?

The eye infection is getting better, it’s quite a bit better than it was yesterday. He still has quite a bad rash on his face (I’ll attach a pic), the GP started him on Piriton yesterday. Does this look like a viral rash to you? I’m scared about measles or chickenpox? The rash is kind of forming scabs now but it’s still so red. You can’t tell in the picture how red it is, it looks worse in real life. Thanks for asking!

What did the doctor say it was. It’s defo not chicken pox or measles as doctor would have been able to diagnose that and doesn’t look like it at all

The doctor just said that it’s because of his eye infection, they prescribed Piriton and then said allergy. So I’m not even sure. I thought it was a viral rash
