What tv shows to watch with 1 year old?

Hi all, DD 13 months, we watch teletubbies and the baby club but she seems to be getting a bit bored of them! Wondering what else would be good or what they move into tv shows wise at this age?

Hey Duggee on BBC iplayer is great, gentle and short (7 mins episode) so you can control how much you watch

Miss Rachel on YouTube is really good for helping babies to talk x

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 21/08/2023 17:59

I wouldn’t set out to watch tv with such a young child, but if you are going to anyway it is better for language development to watch live action (ie not animation) that is not dubbed with faces shown (ie no masks or elaborate face paint).

The first advice is of course don’t, as your LO really has no need for it and has more benefit of playing with you.

But if you do: I found Bluey one of the shows best tolerable for parents.

Bluey has my vote. It has short episodes and usually you learn something about parenting too. It's also not massively stimulating for kids, no flashy lights, no quick change of scenes etc. it's on Disney plus or YouTube has some full episodes.

But yes as others have said, tv is more of a last resort for me! My son has been walking since 10 months old and he is chaos so i watch a couple of episodes if I'm having a rough day but it's not a staple to my routine.

CaveMum · 21/08/2023 18:35

Bluey all the way, even though that’s mostly because I love it!

bryceQ · 21/08/2023 18:35

Yakka dee

dontcallmelen · 21/08/2023 18:35

My dgd liked the Twirly woos, nightgarden & moon baby
also Bluey & Hey Dugee are definitely the most tolerable.

CaveMum · 21/08/2023 18:36

Bluey is also on iPlayer.

Eachpeachpears · 21/08/2023 18:48

Bluey, yakka dee, baby club, twirleywoos are all great. Mine also love the Julia Donaldson cartoons like Stickman

Burpcloth · 21/08/2023 18:51

Tiktak on cbeebies is a good option for that age. Another vote for Ms Rachel on Youtube

Dasisr · 21/08/2023 18:51

Thanks all. Lots of good suggestions here! Will start watching them and see if any get a reaction!

im happy with her proportion of screen time. She’s a poor napper so we have roughy 11 hours of awake time together and around 40 mins of that is tv time so there is a lot of time for playing/reading/interacting together!

Mine loved hey duggee and the twirlywoos at that age.

arlequin · 21/08/2023 19:04

Another vote for yakka dee!

Hiddenvoice · 21/08/2023 19:06

My little one loves Bluey, Hey Duggee and In the night garden.
I’m also a big vote for a little bit of screen time won’t do any harm, sometimes it’s nice to just cuddle on the couch and relax for 15 mins.

Moonshine160 · 21/08/2023 19:06

In the night garden and twirlywoos

Scirocco · 21/08/2023 19:25

Bluey, definitely!

My DC and I both love it. They're a bit older than your LO, but we really enjoy snuggling up in bed on a weekend morning and watching 1 or 2 episodes. We even have little jokes between ourselves from it.

Tjjd2023 · 21/08/2023 19:34

My nearly 19 month old has liked Blippi for months. Similar to miss Rachel, in that it is an engaging person who is 'interacting with them', rather than a cartoon.

Oh yes! Another vote here for Julia Donaldson. We watch the clips on YouTube of stickman, the snail and the whale, etc over and over!

MumofSpud · 21/08/2023 19:40

My grand daughter loves 'watching' football - it must be the colours!
Sh is 18 months now!

OfMark87 · 21/08/2023 19:46

Another vote for bluey.
My son is 14 months and mostly just dances to the theme tune. I don't think actually watches the episodes.

NeverNoMore221 · 21/08/2023 19:51

I think 13 months is too young for Bluey.

In the Night Garden was a huge hit with my boy at that age.

Also search for Nursery Rhymes TV and BBC Teach on YouTube - they were some of the only nursery rhyme completions that are English rather than American. Avoid Cocomelon if you can!

Mysa74 · 21/08/2023 19:57

Bluey, hey guggee and the Peter rabbit cartoon series have been popular with my three, but that that age they all loved watching the "sing and sign" DVDs over and over again . We went to classes once a week and in-between watched and joined in with the recordings. We all love Jessie Cat... and even now at 3,7 and nearly 12 the signs come in handy, especially in noisy places. I sign no, stop, all done and they can't pretend they didn't hear me Grin

unlikelychump · 21/08/2023 19:59

At that age I was still watching stuff I wanted to if I needed a sit down with telly. The good wife and Gilmore girls would be my suggestion.

I'm not sure that was your question but it is my recommendation

ElthamLemur · 21/08/2023 20:02

Aah I miss Twirlywoos. Really sweet and clever. DS is nearly 7 and still sleeps with a cuddly Chickedy.

Agree with others that Yakka Dee is great for speech.

We enjoyed anything with nursery rhymes in it, there was a Channel 5 show called Milkshake Music box but I don’t think you can get that any more. I used to make a YouTube playlist of fun Disney songs too- You’re Welcome, Under the Sea, Just Can’t Wait to be King, Suoercalifragilisticexpealidocious, etc etc.

ElthamLemur · 21/08/2023 20:03

Agree re nursery rhymes! We used to love Milkshake Music Box but not sure it’s available any more.
